Maybe sharing medicines isn't a good idea ?

Apparently we don't need doctors to prescribe antibiotics because out new health secretary has dished them out like smarties to her friends and family (which I thought was an offence ?).

Damn that left wing anti-growth press, eh ?

I'll have a red one please Tezza.

I agree with you. The advice has always been to finish the course and don't share. There are different antibiotics for different ailments. I didn't read the article but she sounds like an idiot. There's a shocker an idiotic tory.

VladmirsPoutine · 15/10/2022 17:56

I won't click a telegraph link but yanbu. Though on the scale of terrible things they've done this is pretty small fry. IIRC wasn't she the one who wanted the NHS to reduce its usage of the Oxford comma. Completely bizarre - she's completely unfit for her role and indeed for office.

TwilightDreams · 15/10/2022 17:59

She's an irresponsible, arrogant, fool.

HarrietSchulenberg · 15/10/2022 18:20

None of this government are fit to lead a donkey let alone a country. This foolish woman is dangerous.

HighlandPony · 15/10/2022 18:41

Not that I agree with her in anything but that’s just normal is it not? We share pills amongst us here. I had dehydrocodeine after my section and gave my pal a few days worth when she fell off her horse.

No its absolutely not normal.

Choconut · 15/10/2022 18:46

Isn't that how to end up with antibiotic resistant bugs? When people just take a few antibiotics randomly here and there?

HighlandPony · 15/10/2022 18:49

sandytooth · 15/10/2022 18:43

No its absolutely not normal.

Everyone I know does it and always has done.

Whitepouringglue · 15/10/2022 18:50

This government needs to go. It's a joke.

Whitepouringglue · 15/10/2022 18:51

Choconut

Apparently more recent research doesn't really support that notion. But I would finish the course in case.

Woolandwonder · 15/10/2022 18:51

I think there is a particular issue with antibiotic resistance. I don't really care if you give your friend some left over co-codomal or whatever (although there are risks there that's your judgement call to make) but we are in real trouble around antibiotics and people sharing or being able to get antibiotics otc really won't help.

Handing out opiates to your mates is not normal. I don't even think it's legal.

And antibiotics is worse because all opiates will do is kill your friend if she isn't careful. Antibiotic resistant bugs might kill us all.

People are very stupid!

XenoBitch · 15/10/2022 19:11

No one should have left over antibiotics. You should always finish the course.

XenoBitch · 15/10/2022 19:13

I remember this playing on the radio. Catchy!

Whitepouringglue · 15/10/2022 19:14

I definitely wouldn't share drugs with anyone. Anti cholinergic effects are no joke.

Getting 21 for a 3 x 5 day course is not unusual.

I think giving your mates some occasional pain relief, even strong ones, I can't get concerned by particularly. But antibiotics is weird

Those of us who react to codeine disagree. And also drug interactions, pregnancy, alcoholism, so many things.

OneTC · 15/10/2022 19:21

Oh yeah I'm not saying it's sensible but I can kind of see the point. With antibiotics I don't see the point so much, it how you have enough of them to make it worthwhile

True, but you wont have enough left over ones for a full course. Passing them on is pointless and dangerous.

Pharmacists and GPs gatekeep some medications for a reason. Passing prescribed meds onto friends/family means you assume you know more than someone who has trained for years.

I have had friends ask for my meds. I had to have a 12 lead ECG before I could be prescribed one of them. Obviously, I said no.

Its a class B drug. Don't hand it out like smarties.

The antibiotics could kill the friend too if she's never taken them and turns out to be allergic.

I agree it's a totally stupid and dangerous thing to do. There's a reason a doctor has to write a prescription for these things.

Everybody shares pain pills. Opioid or otherwise. Legal doesn’t come into it. It’s not exactly legal to run your motor on farm diesel or to fix your mates brake pipe for £20 cash or streaming the football on some dodgy website but it’s also the done thing.

Poor examples. This is people's health we are on about, not a car or plumbing.

Sharing a currently controlled drug? Smart 🙄🙄 There's a reason dihydrocodeine isn't available OTC, and it definitely shouldn't be shared with mates.
