To ask if you recycle your plastics?

I'm not asking about the yoghurt pots that all councils take that don't take much effort to recycle, but about the cellophane wrapper packets that are marked "recycle with bags at big supermarkets" or similar. I only became aware that they were recyclable over lockdown when I was at home and life slowed down a bit and on maternity leave subsequently I made an effort to collect it all and put it in the bin at the supermarket.

The relevant bin is really very small in my nearest supermarket and I just can't believe that many people do recycle there.

I guess I wondered how many people are like I was and just were unaware that this existed, or have I been massively behind the curve?

I took two bags of bags down to the local supermarket last week and there was a huge stack of others next to the bin because it was so full. It has definitely reduced our general waste quantities.

UnaOfStormhold · 15/10/2022 11:10

I just wish there was somewhere I could take plastic trays - I try to buy things without them, reuse them at home and in the garden but I still seem to have far more than seems reasonable and our council won't take them.

TabithaTittlemouse · 15/10/2022 11:10

No because we don’t have that service near us. We do try however to buy as little as possible that can’t be recycled/reused.

IHateWasps · 15/10/2022 11:11

I do but about 6 months ago our local council started accepting those types of plastics alongside bottles.

thelobsterquadrille · 15/10/2022 11:11

No, because the local recycling points are always overflowing.

FistFullOfRegrets · 15/10/2022 11:11

No I don't. I don't have room for yet another category of recycling, I get my shopping delivered so I'd have to make a specific trip to recycle it this defeating the point. I did try, but it was an enormous faff & I don't have much faith that they actually recycle it anyway.

we have communal bins here, it's a nightmare. I recycle everything the council takes & wash cans/bottles etc. my neighbours take 'recycle' to mean 'anything I'm done with' (toys/clothes/household items) so it's all 'contaminated' & I imagine my recycling ends up in landfill. But no amount if communication changes their habits! I'd FAR rather have our own bins in the communal area! (due to main riad/parking/blah blah the communal bin area is a necessary evil)

picklemewalnuts · 15/10/2022 11:13

I've got a bit lazy/cynical about it. I just don't believe it's all getting repurposed. I would if I was sure! I know it's useful to rubbish incinerators to bulk up the calorific content so waste burns better.

Chasingsquirrels · 15/10/2022 11:16

Yes. Doing so has cut my landfill waste down to almost nothing except dog poo most weeks.

Coop in next village has a smallish recycling container.
Tesco in nearest town has a large metal grid sided wheeled receptacle, taller than 6ft. I see other people putting bags in it, and it ranges from empty to almost full. I have no idea how often they empty it.

I have a breadbag clipped to my kitchen bin and stuff it with thin plastics, then tie it up and keep in a box in the garage and take periodically.

Topseyt123 · 15/10/2022 11:16

I put all of it in our dry recycling bin. It is for plastics, paper, cardboard, glass and tins. They don't specify what type, so it all goes in. Has done for years and they have never refused to collect it yet.

Topseyt123 · 15/10/2022 11:18

I should add, I have two dry recycling bins. One was not enough for our family of five, so I asked the local council for a second one and they supplied it. No extra charge.

Notsa · 15/10/2022 11:24

I fill my recycling bin but it fills really quickly and only gets emptied once every two weeks so more than I would like ends up in the general waste bins. Making extra trips to a recycling centre just isn't feasible at the moment.

MissMaple82 · 15/10/2022 11:26

Yes I absolutely do.. I wash everything out and store up and then take to supermarkets

There at the supermarkets!!! Hardly massive effort. That's just laziness

Winterscomingagain · 15/10/2022 11:26

Locally the Co-op and Tesco take this plastic and it's really changed the amount of rubbish I throw out.

Allahor supermarkets have the service!

Needmorelego · 15/10/2022 11:31

I have the same problem as @FistFullOfRegrets . Bloody communal bins. Contaminated ALL THE TIME. The council can't take them to the recycling plant so the landfill dustcart has to do a second trip out to empty them.
I have two kitchen bins - one for recycling and one for every thing else. But to be honest I have just given up dividing it out. It all goes to landfill whatever I do.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 15/10/2022 11:32

No, and the film stuff makes up the vast majority of my waste. I get my shopping delivered as I am in a rural location and there’s nowhere to recycle this stuff locally.

Himawarigirl · 15/10/2022 11:32

My coop has started taking it and is v close to us so I take it there. I collected it before as well but not as many things as the labelling at bigger supermarkets about what they’d take was unclear and didn’t include as many things. It was also more of a chore as I had to make special trips to bigger supermarkets to drop it off.

Same here. I also use a breadbag and stuff it with this crinkly plastic. We are a small household (2 people plus pets) and I probably fill a breadbag every 1 1/2 weeks. I either put mine into the local Co-op or Ocado will take it back with their bags. I am so pleased it is now being collected, but I do hope it is being properly recycled.

Notsa · 15/10/2022 12:09

There is but I very rarely go to one. If I did, I'd probably take some easy to carry stuff with me.

Notsa · 15/10/2022 12:10

Quote completely failed on the above!

TwoTowels · 15/10/2022 12:14

Yes I have been taking them to Sainsbury's for several years, and now that I am having weekly deliveries I give them to the driver to recycle.

woodhill · 15/10/2022 12:17

Yes

We keep a bag and put all the plastic recycling in it and take it to Tesco

HouseBook · 15/10/2022 12:19

We started this year, I just take them to Tesco with me when the bag is full. It's no hassle at all.

QueenOfThorns · 15/10/2022 12:21

YABU to suggest that all councils take yoghurt pots! I wish ours did, but they only take bottles.
