What do you see on the political horizon?

The Tory party are falling apart at the seams and the future is looking gloomy.

Polls suggest that Labour will prevail at the next general election and the blues will become the opposition likely for 8-12 years.

So, what do you foresee on the political horizon and is there any way for the blues to remain on their perch?

My view is that if they very quickly oust Truss this could save some credibility. There are extremely slim pickings in terms of ability to lead the country in the current state it is in and the job seems to have become quite the poison chalice.
I feel like Rishi is probably the only one to bring about a sense of core stability that could see them as real contenders for the reds.
In the midst of all this, the reds (Keir specifically) really needs to set out his stall and show what kind of leader he could be.

In short, I see red at the next GC.

I would love for a general election to be called (feels unlikely at the moment but we can dream), but my issue is that although I had huge faith in Labour at the last election, this time I don’t really know what they stand for and how they’d set about fixing this mess. I suppose that would be part of their election campaign but I just can’t really picture Starmer as PM.

Having said this, I’d probably vote for a stale packet of crisps at this point if it meant the Tories were dead and buried.

PupInAPram · 15/10/2022 07:05

Labour goverment🤞Starmer is boring and competent. We need that badly right now.

TomPinch · 15/10/2022 07:11

I'm outside the UK but didn't the parliamentary party prefer Sunak? So maybe Truss will be replaced with him.

Followed by a zombie government for the next two years and a landslide win for Labour in the next GE.

An election could be forced sooner, but only if a large number of Tories cross the floor.

Metabigot · 15/10/2022 07:13

I see Sunak taking the premiership. I'm no fan of any tory but he seems the winner of the tallest midget competition they have going on there...

Juneyblue · 15/10/2022 07:16

We’re fucked. We’re fucked if Labour get in and fucked of the current Tory party stay in.

its bad.

HRTQueen · 15/10/2022 07:17

In the next few months Truss sacking a number of cabinet ministers and then being challenged and losing

Labour winning next election with a good majority but not a huge majority like predictions of now Iif there were to be a GE next month

re joining the EU but talks from Labour won’t start for a few years yet

TomPinch · 15/10/2022 07:21

but I just can’t really picture Starmer as PM.

I just don't get this at all.

Starmer has a proven career in public administration. But if you're referring to his lack of charisma, perhaps I've been asleep for 500 years and woken up in Idiocracy.

123ZYX · 15/10/2022 07:45

I wonder if there's a chance that some senior conservatives will split into another party to separate themselves from the last few years.

If it was big enough, it could split the vote meaning that we would be more likely have have a hung parliament, which would make the arguments against proportional representation less significant.

However, I'm not sure whether it's more likely that the longer standing conservatives would be more likely to force out Boris Johnson/ Liz Truss/ and their supporters and keep the party. If that happened those leaving might try to set up a new party, but I don't think it would be popular enough to have an impact.

I do feel that the conservatives have now had plenty of chances to make things work after Brexit and it's clearly not working. While there is nothing stopping them trying again with yet another PM before the next general election, every change leaves them looking less electable

nottodaytomorrow · 15/10/2022 08:09

I think probably until the baby boomer generation die out and our children are old enough to vote there will be a Tory government whoever is leading it. A general election is just a waste until the people who suck up the immigration and tax cut promises are not around to elect them.

PortiasBiscuit · 15/10/2022 08:15

We tried charisma with Boris, of settle for dull and competent with starter.
Liz Truss is Gwendoline from St Clare’s, all grown up!

FeralWitch · 15/10/2022 08:16

Godzilla.

TomPinch · 15/10/2022 10:36

Perhaps it could be like Canada in 1993 when the Progressive Conservatives went from government to ... 3 seats.

They did recover by merging with another party. Perhaps in the UK it's more likely that they'll have a big purge, perhaps go crazy for a bit, and be out of office for a decade.
