To think that a hamster cage should not be SO difficult to construct ?

DS8 had a lovely hamster who died of tumour. She had a large cage (which came already built) and lived happily in it until she was nearly 2 years old.

DS8 decided last weekend he would like to get another hamster, a rescue one. Fine, he filled in the application form himself, saw a hamster in a centre near us on the website. They contacted us and said all good but your current cage needs to be the next size up. Again fine, I bought the cage.

Tonight I tried to erect the fucker. It's horrendous. No instructions and when I found a video it (of course) made it all sound so simple. Except that every time you slot one piece in the other bit pops out ! Her old cage is so lovely and sturdy (and already built) and sat on the floor looking at me!

DH finishes work at 9pm so the cage has been abandoned for him to experience the joy 😅 I am resorting to going back to my desk to finish some work and eating cake, all of which are preferable.

Maybe some fairies will turn up downstairs and build it for me (living in hope).I thought about putting a message on Facebook for someone to build it, I mean it's only like when people get someone to build their Ikea furniture (except WAY worse)

Any handy mumnetters who want to lose their shit feel free to pop round and try and put the roof on Grin

Here's hoping hammy will wait until the castle is built

I really cannot stand hamsters and gerbils and those rat type pets and can't understand why people would want them willingly in their house (children I can understand their reasons as they think they're cute, but grown adults for practical reasons, no.) I think they're horrible.

Can you not just keep it in the old cage until your husband fits the new one or you buy a new one? If you ordered it online you probably got two (or more) defective parts which is why they're not fitting together like they do easily in the video you watched.

Unfortunately the rescue centre want a picture of the hamsters potential new home.

Otherwise it would have definitely gone in the current one and I could have spent the money on wine 😆

You don't need to put the extra plastic crap that comes with many new hamster cages in the cage. It's often better without it.

As long as you have the correct size wheel (so that they can keep their back straight when running) and something to climb on, then they are happy.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 14/10/2022 20:36

LOL maybe they wanted to replicate the hamster wheel experience with the neverending hamster cage assembly? 😂Hope you get it sorted!

I bought a Rotastak for ds hamster, late dp & I spent 4 hours battling to put it together, I took it back & exchanged for another model, still couldn't put it together, ds got up the morning after & put it together in 10 minutes, he was only 7.

Send the rescue centre a picture of the unbuilt new cage you have bought so they know you bought the "right" one, and then return it and put hammy in the old one.

I'm an adult with 8 rats! They are the most charming little creatures, full of character and completely different little personalities. They are also very cute!
