For having the TV on for 5 hours today…

Eldest has been floored by a bug and only just getting better- very up and down. We’ve played games, coloured, played outside and been for a walk. Otherwise she’s flat out on the sofa just wanting to watch telly and not even sit up. Youngest (3) has therefore watched approx 5 hours tv too. This whole week eldest has been good for nothing but sleeping and watching tv but I don’t mind when she’s ill. Mum guilt creeping in about the youngest today but our house isn’t big enough to entertain her separately and when she can hear the tv she wants to watch it.
YANBU- it’s only for today/this weekend and TV doesn’t do any harm
YABU- 5 hours is ridiculous for a 3 year old and you need to sort it out

I think you're worrying over nothing.

Scarling · 14/10/2022 17:28

YANBU. It's survival mode when DC are ill. The odd day in front of the TV isn't going to harm your 3yo.

Hope your eldest feels better soon.

MeowMeowPowerRangers · 14/10/2022 17:33

YABU, why didn't you throw in the iPad for the 3 year old too? TV is boring. Grin

Of course YANBU. Stop being so hard on yourself op your doing a great job. Flowers

Mrsjayy · 14/10/2022 17:33

I think you are looking for something to worry about no kid has come to harm with watching a bit of telly, your older one is ill so watching TV as a distraction your younger one is watching TV and not bothering their ill sibling, it's win/win really.

SunlightThroughTrees · 14/10/2022 17:34

TOTALLY fine. Throw your guilt out of the window. Hope your DC is better soon!

NameChangeLifeChange · 14/10/2022 18:05

Thanks all. I’m a huge worrier so now my eldest is getting (slightly) better the worry just moves on. I’m not anti telly anyway (at all!) but the last week has been something else. Stiff drink needed tonight.

TV is always on from 6am - 11am in out house. I know peoole who would always have the TV on. It's fine. What do you think is going to happen?

KangarooKenny · 14/10/2022 18:08

You do what you need to do.

Sux2buthen · 14/10/2022 18:09

Only 5? That's rookie numbers

Amipreg1 · 14/10/2022 18:14

Don't beat yourself up over this, you do what you can to survive when littles one's are poorly. TV won't hurt! I hope your eldest is feeling better soon 🙂

BuffaloCauliflower · 14/10/2022 18:16

Sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do! My toddler definitely had this much TV over many days when I was early pregnant. One day is nothing. Don’t worry 🙂

Mariposista · 14/10/2022 18:22

Write it off as a bad day .Get them out in the fresh air tomorrow. It's not like you do this every day.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 14/10/2022 18:53

When I had the flu my two DDs had the TV on from 8a-8p and even ate in front of TV. I felt better knowing they were not doing anything. It's when they are doing things you can't watch out for that bad things happen. (Think purple magic markers coloring all the white flowers on the pale yellow wallpaper. TV is sometimes a gift from God.)

Trilla · 14/10/2022 18:57

Yabu for fretting over such a none issue.

cestlavielife · 14/10/2022 18:59

Watching horoir movies bad
Cbeebies fine

Anneofwindypoplars · 14/10/2022 19:01

My toddler is going through a very early waking stage.

Watches something on iplayer until CBeebies goes on at 6 and stays on until 9. Then again for an hour in the evening.

Every day.

This made me laugh!

We do a lot more than 5 hours when we’re all that ill. What else are you supposed to do? Poor children clearly aren’t up to anything else.

TV is absolutely fine, especially if you’re with them and spending time with them. If you leave them to watch it by themselves for hours on end when you go off by yourself, obviously that’s different.

Thank god it’s not just me

I do loads with my toddler. Signing classes, music and dancing, soft play, play on the park, rhyme time at the library, feeding ducks, swimming lessons.

But at 5am like hell am I doing anything like that 😂

spicysoup · 14/10/2022 19:08

Do what you need to do. All rules out of the window with a sick child

Exactly! You can't do everything all of the time.

Outwiththenorm · 14/10/2022 19:11

Our DS had a vomiting bug this week and watched 5-6 hours tv on Monday and Tuesday. He just read his first word today (just turned 4). TV = better readers, there I proved it 😬

bigdecisionstomake · 14/10/2022 19:21

Do what you need to do to get by OP! Who are the 9% who think you're being unreasonable? I'm guessing they're not parents of young children...
