To object to these requests to chip in

Company keeps sending messages asking us to chip in for certain people who are celebrating big birthdays.

All of these people are big bosses earning 2-3 times the "shop floor" staff.

I know we don't HAVE to chip on but it just seems really crass, especially during a cost of living crisis.

I've only worked with one of these people directly and I ended up just buying him a couple of pints on a night out instead.

YANBU. Just say you can't afford it. And 2 pints is expensive!

It depends on how it is worded. My DD is a manager, on more than the Staff and they like to get her gifts, but they aren't asked for.

Do they do the same for the shop floor staff? If not why not?

It's not company wide- just team wide.

No, unless it’s a big birthday like a 50th or 60th that’s ridiculous. We chip in for leaving presents or a baby present if someone is going on maternity leave. Chipping in for everyone’s birthday is childish bollocks.

We have at least 3-4 different collections a month. I just ignore now.

YANBU, I hate how these type of things are seen as the norm in office workplaces.. like you're just expected to chip in. Erm no, we're not all able to just put money in to someone we don't know that well!

Organised mugging.
