House price madness

Sorry to rant, but how on earth have house prices been allowed to rise so ridiculously. The going rate here for a basic three bed semi is £300k... The same houses would have sold ten years ago for less than half of that 😩

Yes @PolkadotsAndMoonbeams it's the same where I am. Small housing estate built in early 70s. All 3 bed semis and detached. Most now extended to 4 or 5 bedrooms with prices to match

South west here, second homes and air bnbs have grown noticeably in the last few years. And I'm talking about prime permanent housing areas near schools and shops, not farm barn conversions or purpose built holiday complexes.
It will be interesting to see what the last census shows up. The conflict between those on holiday and those working will escalate. Ethically people are certainly falling over to justify these extra income streams or empty homes, it will be interesting to see how many decide that they don't want to be seen as the bad guy.

Going rate here for a three bed semi is £550k! 😱😱😱. Not London either...

My 2-bed semi is worth approx £500k, 50 miles from London.

I think prices will stabilise, or even go down, now interest rates are rising.

It's a relatively free market, I don't understand who shouldn't have "allowed" prices to rise. I don't think any government who wanted to cap the rise of privately owned assets would be voted for by the general population.

I agree with a PP that empty retail units in towns and cities should be converted into apartments.

When Gordon Brown/Tony Blair messed with the tax on pension funds, it was the death knell for the guaranteed final salary pensions. So many people turned to property investment. Hence the proliferation of "amateur" landlords. Who were buying the kind of property suitable for first time buyers. Which elevated the cost of same. Throw in buy to let mortgages and low rates and here we are.

Very true.

There's a disconnect in thinking.

You can say that again! 😆

You are aware the U.K. has an ageing population with years of falling birth rates. Why do you think we have job shortages & the gov desperate to bring in immigrants?

No one wants to talk about population control, but we need to

We have more over 65s than under 15s & whilst it's great life expectancy has increased healthy life expectancy hasn't so the NHS & social care are going to need £££££ in coming years. How do you suggest we go about population control?

Just been discussing the elderly population problem with my friends today and the fact that our Gvt will not allow assisted dying. All of us would like this option for ourselves. In fact I've not met anyone who doesn't wish to have control over their own death. Why are we kept going on and on with no quality of life? My own father has been in this situation for two years. He wants to die but he can't. I'm sure he's not the only one. Apologies if this distracts from main point of post.
