I’m the worst DIL in the world or so it seems

I’m close to my MIL and we’ve never exchanged a cross word in the 15 years I’ve been with DH - that is, until yesterday!

MIL is dog crazy… so am I.. and we are both the kind of people who send our dogs birthday cards (I’m sure I’ll get some stick for that on here but hey ho!).

In addition, we have always sent each other’s dog’s birthday cards each year.
probably silly I know but just a little tradition :)

However, this year, I’ve had 1,000,001 things going on recently and forgot to send her dog a card as usual.

I was completely flabbergasted to receive a phone call from MIL last night… she was very upset with me over this.

I apologised, but it seems the damage has already been done and she’s in a huge mood with me.

(do you know I’m sitting here reading this back and it seems completely absurd, I promise you all this is genuine!!!)

Am I a terrible DIL?! 😫

Tell her due to the cost of living crisis you can't afford to send a dog a birthday card.

What a bizarre thing to get upset over. 😂

YellowTreeHouse · 14/10/2022 13:17

I’d tell her she was being ridiculous. It’s a dog. It doesn’t need a birthday card.

🤦‍♀️

Dreadful daughter in law! You may laugh, but you are not the one having to console the dog for its bitter disappointment!

malificent7 · 14/10/2022 13:21

Awwwww bless her.

Flowerpower36 · 14/10/2022 13:24

Update: just came over to see her to make sure that she’s actually okay, very out of character for her to be like that with me. She is insistent that nothing deeper is wrong.
(Dog has not held a grudge, strangely enough, I did stop at pets at home on the way and bought him some treats!)
MIL still a bit narked with me but I suspect she’ll get over it!

Ah I find this sweet in a wacky way. I'm sure she will be fine in a bit. Get the dog an extra special treat.

Ponderingwindow · 14/10/2022 13:27

I was in a store the other day and they had a whole section of dog birthday party supplies. Now I understand why.

You MONSTER!

You should be self-flagellating and chanting hail marys while crawling over hot coals and broken glass in penance.

Throw in a few Our Father's and a couple of Glory Be's and you're set!
😆😆

nonetcurtains · 14/10/2022 14:20

How about sending one of these as an apology?

Has anyone asked the dog how he feels about this? It's his birthday after all 😉😉

ShakeYourFeathers · 14/10/2022 14:31

Yanbu

I'm dog mad too. But your MIL is barking (pun intended ) . Just send a card and treats and say happy belated birthday. The dog isn't going to be stroppy at you, they don't know when it's his birthday and he gets treats randomly, they're going to be really happy about that.
