all sensible young ladies would have put their midriff-baring tops away for the Winter and have brought their woolly jumpers out of mothballs.

On a chilly grey morning in my local town earlier in the week, my first visit in a couple of months, a sizeable proportion of the 15 to 25 year old population seemed to be of the opinion that mid October was the appropriate season of the year to to have not just their navels, but large swathes of surrounding skin as well, exposed to the elements.

My Granny would have had a fit, and would probably have gone out issuing vests to all and sundry. But, then, maybe I'm turning into my Granny, although I don't know where I would find the vests!

LOL! It's just a sign of you getting older I'm afraid! Have you noticed that policemen look younger these days?😆

PoundOfNesh · 13/10/2022 20:11

You are indeed turning into your granny. Happens to us all!

I knew I was getting old (well kind of, am 28 but still) when I actually asked a 17 year old if she wanted my jacket to cover up on a cold night last winter (I got a disgusted look)

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 13/10/2022 20:15

Yanbu. What I find absolutely baffling is that during summer massive oversized tracksuits seemed to be all the rage (I mean, fair enough, very comfy but very warm in the heat) and now all of a sudden it's crop tops and shorts with tights??? I'm so confused. I'm only mid 30s and already completely puzzled by youth fashion (have you seen the boys getting perms trend??) so I don't know how I'm going to cope when my kids reach that age!

JennyForeigner2 · 13/10/2022 20:18

I’ve a lovely, warm winter jumper, cut to show off my belly. That’ll keep me going until December, I think.

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/10/2022 20:18

It was warm enough for wearing a t shirt today and Monday gone.

BigEnergy · 13/10/2022 20:27

Went out in town on Sat and knew I was turning into my mum and gran and realised I was not going to feel comfortable inside when I saw the crowd outside the place we intended to go. Girls in crop tops, hot pants and not a coat in sight! We went elsewhere Grin

Pumpkinsbeinghitbyfallingapples · 13/10/2022 20:30

But don't you remember being their age, going out in a short dress with no coat, pretending your lips weren't about to turn blue?

That's when you know you are no longer properly young, when you start taking a coat 😅

lljkk · 13/10/2022 20:40

I had my tum exposed to elements yesterday, while out on a run.

I have some kind of insect bite on my belly button. It drives me crazy when something (like my own shirt) keeps brushing it lightly. Only way I could stop going crazy on my run was to go bare midriff.

TooHotToRamble · 13/10/2022 22:04

I know! I saw a pair of young ladies in crop tops and hot pants with bare midriff and bare legs. at the weekend! I felt cold just looking at them.

Ludo19 · 13/10/2022 22:07

What gets me is the school kids. Raining and going about in either shirts or jumpers.....sitting in class soaking wet. or the boys who were short sleeve shirts gloves and scarves but no jacket? Very strange.....yep I'm definitely old!

Sunnyqueen · 13/10/2022 22:11

You are turning into your gran yes. I will say though the dresses girls go on nights out in now would have only been worn in the bedroom and bought from ann summers 'in my day'.

This may not work. But so funny re kids and coats. Thought with my hormones in happy to be with out a coat in the rain

Fifthtimelucky · 14/10/2022 00:29

I am in my 60s so not a young lady, and I haven't worn anything that shows off my midriff for at least the last 30 years.

I have, however, been walking about in a short-sleeved tee shirt recently. It's been lovely and warm in the sun.

Likewise, tshirt and jeans today here in the northwest.

QuinionsRainbow · 14/10/2022 22:58

We went through the anti-coat stage during the upper year at primary and the first couple of years at comprehensive, until sense took over and they realised that it's more fun to be unfashionable but warm/dry than "with it" and wet. We get a regular parade past our windows at going-home time. Coats started to make an appearance in the last week or so, but there is still a significant hardy group who regard a cotton shirt as an adequate barrier between themselves and the North Pole.

A bit judgmental OP.

When I was that age it was considered uncouth for anyone over about a size 10 to expose their skin. I love that these days larger ladies have more confidence and dress in a way they’re happy with. More power to them! I do however think “you must be bloody freezing” - also turning into my granny who thought women in crop tops would damage their kidneys 😂😂

QuinionsRainbow · 16/10/2022 17:31

Not intending to be judgemental, just slightly amazed at the preponderance of bare flesh on a rather grey Monday morning in October, definitely not T-shirt weather around here that day. I did feel, however, that the teenage work-experience student who served me in the public library that morning wearing a T-shirt rolled up under her bra in lieu of a formal cropped top, the ensemble then topped off with an unbuttoned cardigan, could have done with a better briefing as to appropriate attire for a customer-facing public service role.

20 years ago I wouldn't have even considered a coat in December

sandytooth · 16/10/2022 17:44

One of the teens in my life was wearing an oodie over her crop top and shorts today. Baffling.

YellowTreeHouse · 16/10/2022 17:45

YABVU and your granny would have been very rude.

You don’t feel the cold as much when you’re younger.

HighlandPony · 16/10/2022 17:46

I’m 36 and I’m still in 3/4 leggings and flip flops. I’m Scottish, we’re hardy
