To think second hand prices are insane these days

Askinforabaskin · 12/10/2022 20:29

Expecting first DC, still early days and we want to wait until after the 20 week in a couple of weeks to start buying stuff.

But I have been browsing some second hand baby sites just for a general idea… and I have been absolutely shocked by the prices being asked!

£25 for a GAP pram suite.

£15 for one baby grow (not a fancy brand as far as I know)

£7 for a supermarket brand jumper

Surely these don’t cost much more new?!

I’m not in a position where I need to buy second hand, but it seems crazy when they are in them for so little time to buy everything new from a financial and environmental perspective.

But I refuse to be ripped off!

There does seem to be some really good bargains on FB marketplace, but I am more after individual items I take a fancy to rather than bags and bags of stuff.

Go to Vinted, lots of kids stuff starting from 1£

sandytooth · 12/10/2022 20:31

If you're looking on ebay they'll have to pay postage too which adds to the cost.

Sciurus83 · 12/10/2022 20:32

Vinted, and get bundles to save on postage

rosyroses · 12/10/2022 20:34

Vinted

Brainfogmcfogface · 12/10/2022 20:39

yanbu at all! Sustainability has become the new in thing (even love island has used clothes) and with the COL/energy crisis more people are buying used clothing and selling to get by, so clothes they would have just sold to get rid of no matter the price they’re now wanting money back on.
Im just straight up poor, I’ve always brought second hand, even primark is a stretch, my children never have new things, even birthday clothes have always been used. but I’m struggling to afford decent second hand nowadays, I used to buy bundles of 20+ items for £10-15 but now everything is sold individually and at £5+ then P&P on top if not local, most mums I know, regardless of financial circumstances buy used and brag about it too, I’m struggling to adequately cloth my children this winter.

Allthecoloursoftherainbow · 12/10/2022 20:42

Those re-selling sites are crazy. Vinted is your friend here!!

OnlyHams · 12/10/2022 20:44

Sounds like you’re just looking in the wrong places

Vinted is great for second hand and definitely not at the prices you’ve listed

thankyouforthesun · 12/10/2022 20:50

We have found the opposite. Do bundles on Facebook marketplace. I just sold a load of 2-3 stuff including coats, summer, winter, swimwear, jumpers, some designer, some totally unworn, an entire wardrobe basically, for £25. I've got some similar ones up that I can't even shift. People don't seem to want second hand at the minute but I can't bear to put perfectly good, often brand new clothes into landfill! I'd happily give it away for free if I thought it'd be used.

sandytooth · 12/10/2022 20:51

The Next prices on there seem quite high tbh. Can usually find a bundle on ebay for about £10 for 4-5 pairs of leggings. Haven't looked throughly though.

Labracadabra · 12/10/2022 20:52

I think OP might be involved with the website she mentioned....seems like a cheeky way to plug it!

I'm in a similar position myself!

MassiveSalad22 · 12/10/2022 20:55

Definitely @Labracadabra , that was very convenient wasn’t it!

Summerishere123 · 12/10/2022 20:55

Ive found the opposite. Trying to sell kids toys. Good stuff too like slyvanian family sets and gravitrax sets and having to sell at very low prices to get any interest.

Happily give it away - charity shop?

gogohmm · 12/10/2022 20:57

Just go to the supermarkets, excellent baby clothes

Yep I thought the same! I buy all DS clothes on Vinted now, so cheap.

WonkasBooboofixer · 12/10/2022 20:59

Just buy a load of cotton baby grow multipacks they all end up covered in vom and poop

Just coming on to say I thought the same.

”I just this minute came across this website that I know nothing about and have never used before but I shall now do all my baby shopping on it!” 🤔

I've been finding the same - got some beautiful brand new coats that I have literally never worn and zero interest. They cost £80 new.

But: I found this organisation yesterday for donating clothes to refugees in the UK who are in poverty & cannot afford clothing. You pay the postage but it's essentially a donation of clothing to someone very much in need and I'm putting some items up because why not let them go to someone who will be able to make good use of them: www.giveyourbest.uk/howtogive

Primark for basics like vests, muslin cloths, baby grows etc. Vinted for everything else

Not at all. I’ve actually spent the last half hour scrolling through and yes Vinted is much better and has much more than the site I mentioned.

the worst offender seems to be sweet pea, it’s extortionate!

NCT nearly new sales, full of bargains. Actual charity shops will be cheaper.

Or just buy a load of multipack babygros as PP said.
