I'm just wondering why this is not hitting the news more.

My son has a Virtual Reality headset, last night I received a new email from Meta (Facebook) regarding new updated to the terms and conditions "Eye Tracking Privacy Notice"

Now I'm not very up on technology so I did a bit of research on this and the new VR headsets Meta Quest Pro (Due for Released in October 26th) and Quest 2 that people will undoubtedly buy for their kids charismas etc.. Will record all eye tracking and facial features of users, they will store and and record all retinal data.

What I have found out there is numerous privacy concerns as Facebook will use this technology to see how users react to adverts and content by recording and analyzing eye movement including subconscious eye movement to build a picture of the users and target for content and adverts. They will effectively be storing facial features, retinal data and subconscious analysis for their own benefit. Now to me this is very scary stuff and goes well beyond the conventional marketing and tracking of adverts etc.

There seems to be no laws currently covering this type of data collection and I'm now concerned some parents may purchase this technology with out knowing all the facts.

AIBU - to be concerned?

They shouldn't have to but if they want a grown up discussion on the subject it might be the best course of actiin, otherwise this thread dies and OP feels deflated. It was just something they might not have considered.

OnlyHams · 12/10/2022 21:12

OP you don’t seem to have a scooby-doo what you’re talking about

What a bunch of nasty replies on this thread. @Pixiedust1234 why should the OP repost due to all the nasty replies, trying their best to derail the thread.

From what I have read they only said one product wrong, the rest is widely available to look up on the web and true.

Which replies were nasty?

Which replies were nasty?

None. Many now gone due to 'troll hunting'

I still am curious as to who is buying the quest pro for their kids when it is not a gaming device. What are they hoping to do with it?

quest 3 will be out next year.

Don't you have school in the morning?
If you are too old for that, then grow up.

Really? Just for pointing out OP was posting the wrong info?

Does that justify someone making a thread pretending to be me?

OP your post doesn’t match your link so I’m not sure what you’re panicking about, do you even know?

XenoBitch · 13/10/2022 23:37

Because some people are worried.. and because some people think I am a horrid person... how can I reassure anyone?

How can I make my first comment seem nicer?
The quest 2 has been out for 2 years now. It does not have the capability for eye tracking or face recognition. Anyone buying this headset for their kids for xmas need not worry about that sort of thing. However, it is owned by Meta, so if they have a headset, they will have a FB account, so Meta will have tons of data on them already. If any parent is really worried about this, they will not be allowing their kid on FB.

The quest Pro... it is predominantly aimed at developers and people seeking to work in AR. It is not a gaming device, so buying it for your 13 year old is possibly a waste of money. I say possibly. I had a look in the Meta store at the apps/games, and none support the Pro.
If you want a gaming VR headset, the quest 3 will be out next year.

Absolutely nothing - there are some weird people on here lately who are trying to redefine anyone who doesn't agree with an OP as "nasty" - it's beyond ridiculous.

Factual reply's[sic] are vindictive? No.

The sock puppet accounts are getting out of hand.

@XenoBitch was absolutely correct, factual if not blunt. Not nasty. If you want a hand hold hun, the other site is great for that.
