I mean...really, am I missing something? I have visions of DS living on Innocent smoothies and refusing to eat anything else for the rest of his life.....

no 'fence, scottishmummy.

tone of post could be translated to mean 'be relaxed and go for it' - in which case, absolutely agree -

allergen scoffing is rife where i come from, (NOT SCOTLAND) so thought best to nag like nervous hen.

none taken i did mean introduce a range of (healthy)foods go for it...find wht works

ladette, i think it's as simple as four-month-olds just don't tend to have the co-ordination to self-feed so you kinda have to spoon purees (probably at 6 mos your lot were on fingers of toast etc). since the recommendation now is 6 months it allows us just to skip the puree, that's all.

sycamore, honestly, imo and ime they are little freaks. sometimes dd would gag something back into her mouth, pull it out with her hand, cackle maniacally, turn it round and put it straight back in again. weirdos. tbh they know what they're doing, they know what they're capable of.

i think that it's nevertheless unfair to put 'pressure' on mums to do BLW as they also know what they're capable of... for some people the mess is a no-no, they can't get over their (entirely reasonable) fear of choking or even gagging etc.

now it's all very well those of us who've done it saying 'don't worry' but some people do worry, that's just their personality type, so they're always going to be better off taking it slower with purees first. because it should be a pleasure, really, that's the main focus for me.

DS was a spoon refusenik.

I weaned him on chunks and lumps after discovering him picking up titbits up off the floor and eating them, so started to leave a hansel and gretel trail of food for him. (Yes, on the floor!).

thanks Aitch - he is capable to grabbing food and putting it in his mouth, but I am one of those worriers who thinks he may literally take on more than he can deal with. Maybe I should trust my LO more. Finger foods are on the horizon....

He is only given a tbsp of puree at the mo after he has taken his full milk feed so am being really careful that his main intake is from me still.

Interesting to learn about that condition though, had never heard of it before today.

he almost certainly will take on more than he can eat, that's for sure. when dd started off she used to bite off big chunks of carrot and not even attempt to swallow them, she just opened her mouth and let them drop straight back out again. it's amazing watching them learn, imo.

Well bugger me, I am converted as a result of this thread. I just didn't really get it having weaned 3 DCs on purees, so finally got onto Aitchs blog for some ideas.

For days DC4 has been pursing her lips for anything spoonfed except yogurt. For lunch she has just had, philly on toast, fruit puree on toast, cheese sandwich, banana slices, cooked sliced fruit. Her hand/mouth co-ordination improved dramatically during the course of the meal.

Delighted as I am, I did get up today and made veg stock and purees. The fruit puree is fine as it'll go on toast, but potato and courgette anyone?

No matter, its a Sunday Roast later. Wondering how she'll fare with a few roast spuds

Aitch · 27/01/2008 13:17

lol, fox, well bugger you indeed.
potato and courgette soup, maybe? dip bread into it and stand well back?

if its any help, I did a bit of BLW with dd3, a mate did purees with hers and another mate did complete BLW - all babies now aged between 18m and 2 and all seem to eat exactly the same, can all use a spoon and all eat everything.

I cant believe I ever got my knickers in a twist over it as as far as I can see it hasnt made a blind bit of difference to any of their eating habits.
