Three separate towels!?

Somehow I got to adulthood without knowing about the necessity for dedicated glass towels. New OH is English and insists on them. Glassware is only to be dried with glass towels, NOT regular teatowels. Fair enough, it takes all the streaks off and all that.
But… my question, which he can't answer, is, why don't we just use the glass towels to dry everything, whether it's glass or not? Presumably that won't harm the other items.
He doesn't know the answer but still insists that glass towels are only for glasses.... so now I have to have three bleedin' towels hanging up in my tiny kitchen!!??

Sounds like a pain in the posterior. I'd only want to shine glasses up for special meals. Day to day, a normal tea towel does the job perfectly well. We don't own towels just for glass, though have some that do the job better than others.

I've never heard of a glass towel and in 43, born and bred in England.

Glass towels is definitely not a thing. And if it is actually a thing, it won't be in this house. Leaving stuff to dry in its own sweet time is a thing.

I can recall seeing tea towels with glass printed on them. They tend to be the non fluffy kind. I have also seen them be used for all drying up. I fund the microfibre cloths are best for glasses and they are the only thing I actually dry.

Glass towels are definitely a thing. I think they’re linen and as well as buffing up the glass they don’t leave any lint. However, pre dishwasher days I would use a glass towel for cutlery and crockery- unless I’d left them to drain and dry naturally.

I have heard of posh and formal people using a dedicated “glass” towel - strictly just for the glasses. Personally I just have one towel for drying hands in the kitchen and another for everything else.

I don't even dry them... I just dump them upside down on the draining board and they stay there until I run out of space and am forced to start putting stuff away.

Glass towels are a thing in hospitality - commonly used in restaurants and behind bars.
in those places glass towels are used as they don’t leave lint or streaks. They are kept only for glass because behind a busy bar you don’t want to grab a towel to quickly wipe a smear off a glass, only to find it was previous used to hold a plate of bolognese or mop up spilled ketchup which is now on your glass…

i don’t wash up enough glasses at home to bother having separate, and can take the time to check the cloth / swap it out before use, but he’s not mad at all to do things that way

Lol, defo not a thing. I mean, you can probably buy items labelled as such because let’s face it, a fool and his money and all that.. but really, just dont pander to this batshittery! I guarantee the sky will not fall in….

I mean not a thing in normal homes, lol. Agree they are used in hospitality venues, but really, how many glasses are you using daily op? And can you BA to care about the odd streak on a glass…?

If I have to dry glasses I use kitchen paper. Generally I leave them on the draining board.

Tea towels leave bits.

If we're washing up by hand if the dishwasher is full or something I aways do glasses first, cutlery, then crockery, then pans. DH doesn't get this and chucks it all in randomly. So very wrong.

It might have been a thing in the old days of hotels where a linen type cloth was best for shining glasses , you sometimes get vintage teatowels marked Glass Cloth. It's a bit perfectionist. Did he grow up in a stately home with a butler?
