To go swimming with a cold??

I live swimming in our local lake - tomorrow is a perfect day for it but I have quite a bad cold - mostly in my chest.
the water temp will be cold ish around 15 degrees. Air temp lower but I have a big fluffy robe to wear after.

DW says if I go for a dip I will get pneumonia

DFriend days it’ll probably help the cold.

AIBU to go in??

No that's silly don't take the risk

FleeUpFreeTime · 10/10/2022 17:48

Only you know if you’re up to it

Mindymomo · 10/10/2022 17:49

No, I wouldn’t.

Hellocatshome · 10/10/2022 17:51

You won't get pneumonia thats not how it works but it would be a silly thing to do. Have you done any cold water classes? This is like rule 101 dont go swimming if you are already unwell.

Gotskeaswr · 10/10/2022 17:51

Dear friend seems to think that fresh air will help and being cold makes no difference as it’s a virus… she’s well up on her wild swimming…
oh and something about Water ‘cures’ too…

‘Have you done any cold water classes?’

no, but I’ve been open water swimming for 25 odd years… astonishingly this has never come up before as I rarely get colds or ill, and when I have they’ve not clashed with swimming schedule…

Are you actually going to be swimming distance or just dipping. I always assume people mean swimming swimming when sometimes they mean just dipping which would be different.

Gotskeaswr · 10/10/2022 17:55

Dipping, 20 mins max in the water

What risk?

OP, I'm a sea swimmer and have swum with a bad cold...made me feel much better, and the salt water sinus rinse helped a lot. I don't know what people think the risk is, but if you feel up to it, you're fine to swim.

TwilightSkies · 10/10/2022 17:58

I think cold swimming can help your immune system. Doubt if it would help your cold though.

Ah well thats different then, probably fine if you feel up to it go for it. I was thinking more along the lines of 2 to 3km minimum but thats what you get for having a competitive swimmer DS you kind of forget not everyone is as crazy as he is.

Mumofone2021 · 10/10/2022 18:00

I’m an open water swimmer and I always feel better after. Gets the blood flowing…

Namechangedforspooky · 10/10/2022 18:03

Sounds fine to me. I always found swimming killed off any festering germs
btw I’m a doctor, if you feel ok then go. Obviously if you don’t feel ok then don’t go…

Gotskeaswr · 10/10/2022 18:17

Wheezy but I do think a dose of cold water might kick my body up a notch on fighting this
