Every day I get letters for a Mr M Delaney, Mr & Mrs Short, Miss L Rees and Mr G Fletcher and Mr K Edwards.

Now most of the mail is just junk mail but we keep getting letters for Mr K Edwards (in particular) and I have handed them back to the postman as they look important, but he still insists on posting them.

I opened one of the letters adressed to Mr K Edwards and it was a letter from the baliffs saying they were coming to take his belongings .

I have only lived at this accomodation for 2 months (rented) and can't believe the amount of mail I am getting for different people.

AIBU to be worried about this? I have visions of coming home from work and the baliffs have taken my belongings. Who shall I contact?

Bailiffs cannot break in to recover goods, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Put all post back in a post box (do not give to postie) marked "no longer at this address". It is illegal to open post addressed to someone else.

SnappyLaGore · 26/01/2008 14:52

just put it aside and then periodically do as freckle says. or chuck it in the bin. why would it bother you?

I had this problem at several places. I discovered, inadvertently that the most effective way of getting rid of the mail is to write on the envelope in big letters, "DEAD, PLEASE RETURN TO SENDER." I used to just write, "No longer at this address, please return to sender," and that was fairly effective, but then the previous owner of the house died and I started writing "dead" and that immediately stopped all the mail. There is no point in handing it back to the postman. You must write on it "return to sender" and then repost in a postbox. You are right to be concerned about the bailiffs one. I might even contact them and let them know the other guy is no longer there.

Snappy I think she's worried about it in case bailiffs break into her flat!

Boozy, I agree with freckle, we used to get christmas cards every year to previous owners of our old house - roughly 8-10 a year! We tought it was funny and would display them on teh mantel piece

BoozySuzie · 26/01/2008 14:58

I heard a rumour from the neighbours that the guy in question is on the run from the police for fraud. Do you think I should phone the police.

The neighbours have said that there have been so many people coming and going from this house. They said a pub chain owned it and rented it out to pub managers.. I need to do some investigating methinks.

Thanks.

As I said, bailiffs do not have the right to break into someone's home - unless the resident has previously let them in, which the OP clearly hasn't.

Opening post addressed to other people is illegal, so if you contact the police about the bailiff's letter you may actually be putting yourself into hot water.

I still get what looks like bank letters for the previous (deceased) owner of my house. I find letters less annoying than the phone calls we've been getting for the last six years for a Mr Laurence. The people who ring are apparently getting the number of the side of a builder's van. If the guy wants any customers, I really do think he should put the right number on it.

I would be rather worried about the bailiff letter too, although they cannot break in, and they aren't looking for you so can't take anything belonging to you. I think all you can do really is put 'return to sender' and have another word with the postman.

when moved into a new house this happened i sent back marked "not at this address"

if a letter has the return address google it, and if a credit company phone up explain person has moved. that stopped all the credit mail

i also gave my estate agent name/telephone as the contact to confirm previous resident's new address, as they had it as they handled the sale and knew forwarding address

don't open anymore mail thats not yours, it's illegal

We moved here in 2006. Last year we got their car tax renewal letter. I passed it on to them via a neighbour who was still in contact with them. I thought they might inform the DVLA of their change of address but no, this year another letter arrived for car tax! So sent it return to sender. Feel mean but it is nearly 2 years! Argghhh

cece · 26/01/2008 18:11

BTW I stopped all their junk mail by signing up to mail preference service in their names

Shaniece · 26/01/2008 18:12

We still get mail from the people we bought our house off 4 years ago and I mean important stuff like car tax, child tax credits, bills . I used to pass it on to our neighbour who would see her once a month but now I just bin it.

FrannyandZooey · 26/01/2008 18:13

send all back saying 'not known at this address'

and sign to mail preference service in their names as suggested earlier - this stops the junk

scottishmummy · 26/01/2008 18:20

CeCe- smart thinking re: mail preference service

Freckle · 26/01/2008 18:25

We still get stuff for the previous owner and we've been here almost 5 1/2 years. We also have problems because he ran a business from here (medical practitioner) and this address is listed as a business address which prevents us from obtaining certain services until we can persuade whoever to list the address as residential.

hi my friend had an identical problem when she moved into her flat as regards to the previous owner and bailiffs.

Firstly she changed the locks and then she contacted the police who were very helpful and she also contacted the bailiff people. The police did not tell her off for opening the mail either.

Hope this helps.

It may also be worth getting in contact with your neighbours to see if they can keep an eye on things if you are out at work.
