Yes, there is a diagram.

This is on my commute to work. I join the motorway from a feeder road with three lanes. The first two lanes take you left on the roundabout (the way I want to go). The third lane takes you round a roundabout to join the motorway going in the other direction. There isn't an option to go straight on. Everyone joins from the same direction on the feeder road, which only goes to the motorway.

There are always long rush hour queues in the first two lanes. Some drivers cut the queues by zooming up the right-hand lane, going all the way around the roundabout and cutting into the queuing traffic joining the slip road.

AIBU to think this is CFery and refuse to let them in?

If you can't beat them join them. It's legitimate.

Georgeskitchen · 10/10/2022 12:33

Its CFery and I wouldn't let the CF in 😁

whynotwhatknot · 10/10/2022 12:39

cant you just stickto the left filter lane then you wont have to let anyone in

Firstruleofsoupover · 10/10/2022 12:41

I always assumed it was CFery when I see it and sit very disapproving in the slow moving lanes. There is one near us like this, very similar except for that triangle between left and middle lanes. How can it not be CFery in that it takes those who play it straight even longer to get home because of people doing this! It's funny it's possible to think of all sorts of people one knows, and whether they would do it or not. If it's perfectly legal I'd be surprised! Let me go get the Highway Code 2022 edition.

OldTinHat · 10/10/2022 12:41

I was taught to do that when taking lessons for my advanced driving test. Perfectly acceptable and not CFery I'm afraid. You will be in the wrong if you block the other driver.

takealettermsjones · 10/10/2022 12:41

You can't just refuse to give way to the right at a roundabout just because you think they're being cheeky! If you caused an accident you'd be at fault.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/10/2022 12:44

If they weren't allowed to do that it would be blocked off. Is it really only one entrance to the roundabout? Or can you enter from another direction?

Snoozysnoozy · 10/10/2022 12:52

I can't believe what I'm reading. If everyone did this you'd end up completely blocking the roundabout for all users.

Shakirasma · 10/10/2022 12:56

Refusing to let someone in for any reason, particularly on a point of principle is a dick move imo.

Not so @Snoozysnoozy .
If everyone did it, there would be no traffic at all in the first 2 lanes.
Using all 3 lanes, spreads the load a bit?

ReadtheFT · 10/10/2022 13:00

I always do it,why sit in traffic.
Same when there's a lane that will be closed ,as soon as there's the sign everyone queue leaving the lane completely empty. Surely the best way is drive until the lane is actually closed then take turns merging in?
I always drive until the lane is actually closed and get a few dirty looks, but couldn't care less tbh.

that1970shouse · 10/10/2022 13:05

As long as they are going round the roundabout and not trying to cut in from the right hand lane without going round the roundabout, they're doing nothing wrong. If you refused to give way to traffic coming round the roundabout then you would be the one in the wrong.

Admittedly I haven't read the Highway Code recently (suppose I should do as -there have been lots of changes) but it used to say exactly that - when two lanes merge, you should drive forward in whichever lane you're in, until you reach the merge point, then "merge in turn".

WireSkills · 10/10/2022 13:07

Yup - not exactly the British etiquette of queuing, but perfectly legal and something I have contemplated doing myself (normally only when I get to the top of the queue and think "hmmm... that would have been quicker").

If everyone did it, however, it would cause lane 3 to clog up too, so keep it quiet for now! ;-)

Firstruleofsoupover · 10/10/2022 13:08

HC 2022 Rules 137/138 states that you should use the right hand lane for overtaking or turning right.

Nothing much more.

HC doesn't say anything specific about approaching a roundabout in this context other than Rule 184 You should get in the correct lane according to signs and road markings.

Well I'll be boogered. However, said publication says nothing about speed in the middle lane of a motorway whereas I thought it was part of the Highway Code not to drive faster than the right hand lane. I don't otherwise someone on the right hand lane is less safe if they want to move into the middle lane.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 10/10/2022 13:09

Oh i always do this, why would i sit in a queue i don't need to, and once i'm on the roundabout i have right of way over the 2 lanes of queueing traffic

updownleftrightstart · 10/10/2022 13:11

How do you know who are the CFs who have just gone round the entire roundabout to skip the queue, and who has genuinely joined the roundabout from a completely different road?

xogossipgirlxo · 10/10/2022 13:13

It's cheeky, but not against the law.

It makes me wonder too. Unless she takes note of every car/colour/reg plate that enters roundabout and then checks who tries to join the motorway?

Oh God yes, the merge in turn muppets.
Every fool that uses their car to block the outside lane because the lanes will merge 800 yards ahead should lose their license, along with the pricks who refuse to allow cars in at the merge point.

Somanysocks · 10/10/2022 13:22

There's a kind of similar situation near me but the council put traffic lights at the roundabout so people just push in the left hand lane further back. It gets quite dangerous as you can get forced onto the sliproad (by arses in vans) even if you're going straight on.

Everyone joins from the same road and the same direction. The road is only for people joining or leaving the motorway. The only reason (other than pushing in) someone would join from the right at the roundabout is if they came off the motorway by accident and wanted to rejoin.
