iPad use has helped reading?

Preface with none of this post is supposed to sound pretentious! Every child develops at their own rate and is different I know.

Friend has made a comment about my child’s iPad use after I mentioned they had one. They have iMessage on it and it’s set up with various family members and it’s monitored. She is able to read and type messages with no issue at all, I’m actually very impressed with their reading. Can read fluently unless a word is particularly difficult. They are 6. My friend thinks this is a bit much screen usage for a 6 year old.

Friends child is the same age and does struggle with reading. Her parents have very high responsibility jobs and work late so their child spends her time playing with toys a lot which is lovely, she has a great imagination and creative personality. But AIBU to think that my DDs iPad use has actually contributed to her reading skills? I think she is being a bit precious to judge what I let my child do but in reality it has played a huge part in her learning? To mention my child doesn’t spend all day on their iPad

It just seems a bit judgey to me when in reality it has helped my child academically

Plenty of children learn to read without ipads. Fair enough for you ro decide to ket your 6 year old use one but I don't think lack of an ipad is what's causing your friend's dd to struggle.

iPad and other games definitely helped my two, my eldest came on really well with reading dialogue in a game and there’s a lot of YouTube videos which teach colours, numbers etc for toddlers with songs and repetition. Obviously this is in addition to my interaction with them, playing with toys and nursery etc.

computer games can help with coordination, logic and problem solving, maths, economics (buying and selling of goods and using resources to make things), teamwork and perseverance amongst many other skills.
