instead or perhaps as well as power cuts, they should think about all the buildings lit up at night

total waste of electricity
causes light pollution
what exactly are the benefits?

But it is a waste of resources and causes light pollution @Thegreenballoon

Sometimes that’s true - though I think there’s often security issues behind it. Obviously no organisation should just be wasting power for the sake of it. But I don’t think turning off lights in car showrooms at 2am is any kind of solution to or substitute for emergency power cuts, which seemed to be what your OP suggested.

LetMeGoogleThat · 10/10/2022 12:08

All supermarkets should be made to put doors on the fridges, complete waste of energy and then they turn the heating up to counteract it.

catandcoffee · 10/10/2022 10:33

Shops also need to lower their heating.

Customers go in wearing outdoor clothing, and within a few minutes you're overheated.

Yeah, fuck the staff, they can freeze

MintJulia · 10/10/2022 12:12

Shops , offices etc often leave them on for security purposes. Burglars don't like walking through brightly lit offices with cameras running. Same for car showrooms.

But you can have motion sector lights instead.

CactusFlowers · 10/10/2022 12:15

Sensor!

SummerInSun · 10/10/2022 13:08

Where are all these commercial premises who leave lights on? I work in central London and all the lights go out when there aren't people in the room moving. The lights over my desk sometimes go out if I'm just concentrating hard on something g and the only thing moving is my typing fingers!

WireSkills · 10/10/2022 13:19

All of our office lights are motion sensitive. It can be a bit annoying if you haven't moved for a while and you're plunged in to darkness, but overall I really like it. The main hallway lights (communal parts) were always on but have also recently been changed to motion activated ones too.

There's absolutely no need for buildings, inside or outside, to be lit up at night.

It's a quiet day in our office today and we haven't put any heating on today either. It's not warm, but it's not unbearable either. There's no need to put the heating on to 24 degrees, when it's perfectly fine at 19 in here.

There are so many things everyone can be doing to save a bit of energy here and there.

tackling · 10/10/2022 13:37

100%

I really hope that we get better at this over time, we waste so much energy.

bingbummy · 10/10/2022 14:07

You think they're unaware? We've noticed this, but they haven't?

My point being the know full well what will save energy and that's a big shining beacon of energy waste.

They're liars remember. Maybe the measures they want to put in place are not about energy at all.

Surely motion sensors are much better than leaving the lights on all the time - better functionally as well as less wasteful.

During the 3-day week in the 70s, shops didn't have their window displays lit up after they'd closed for the day.

I don't know if it was compulsory to preserve electricity or something they did voluntarily though. I think it should be compulsory.

I've cone to believe that if it isn't compulsory, it won't be done. Certainly I wouldn't think big, greedy chain stores would ever volunteer to be selfless.

weathervane1 · 10/10/2022 14:24

Just back from a walk in Rivington, Lancs and the rural cafe has all of its outside spotlights on in broad and very sunny daylight. You'd think there wasn't an energy crisis.

Abra1t · 10/10/2022 14:29

Yes turn off unnecessary lights or turn them down/put on sensors and let us see the stars. Jupiter is stunning at the moment.

Theopossumwasmeantforme · 10/10/2022 14:31

Bramshott · 10/10/2022 10:44

Absolutely! And the government should lead on this by turning them off in/on government buildings.

They do. I stay still so they go off and I can sit in the dark 😂

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 10/10/2022 14:35

Aldi could do with turning the heating down. Even in the middle of summer my legs are being assaulted by the radiators under the packing shelf. Why they had the heating on then baffled me.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 10/10/2022 14:39

CulturePigeon · 10/10/2022 12:03

Totally with you, OP. I've been grunting about this for years. I do try to stick to the principle that my little efforts do count, but it's hard to believe it's worth switching off your own appliances etc when city centres are lit up like the Blackpool Hallucinations every night. There's got to be another way.

Blackpool hallucinations 😂
Might give them a go as an adult they sound fun

Karrots · 10/10/2022 14:43

Agree.

I listened to someone talk about this on Radio 4.

The upshot is depending if they have LED lights it may not be huge amount BUT across all the UK it adds up and more importantly changes behaviour in lots of other ways regarding energy consumption.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 10/10/2022 15:19

Yeah the planet’s tombstone will read “here lies planet earth, we knew how to avoid killing it but it looked so pretty while it burned and st least none of our cars got nicked.” 🤦‍♀️

zåäö · 10/10/2022 15:37

That’s what they do where I live. Even churches are closing down. Do as I say, not as I do don’t go down well here. At all.

Feels so hopeless doesn't it. Poor planet

Speedweed · 10/10/2022 15:57

Totally agree - commercial buildings being lit up out of office hours should be illegal from the first floor and above (apart from the warning lights for planes).

Absolutely no need to have lights on.

Plus it's really bad for insects.

Ellmau · 10/10/2022 21:54

What about Christmas lights this year?

BigWoollyJumpers · 11/10/2022 12:01

Ellmau · 10/10/2022 21:54

What about Christmas lights this year?

I was thinking about this, but checking with our council, they upgraded our town lights a few years ago to LED's, so really don't use that much electricity.

thelobsterquadrille · 11/10/2022 12:15

@Aposterhasnoname I'm sure companies can alter uniforms temporarily to allow staff to wear extra layers 🤷🏻‍♀️

When I was in retail we were always allowed extra layers and/or jackets in winter to save money on the heating bill.
