To keep DD (6) off school with a cold?

How ill does your child have to be to keep them off school? Do you send them in with a cold? DD (6) catches every virus going and has so much time off school (she has a genetic condition that can cause a weakened immune system but her blood work always comes back ok). The problem is when she has a cold she often vomits because of the congestion as she has a sensitive gag reflex. I often feel like a bit of a fraud when I ring school to say she won't be in because she's vomited from congestion, but she's actually fine in herself. It's always worse in the morning too. I guess I'm wondering that her vomiting aside, if it's the "norm" to keep a child off school with a cold anyway?

You know your child best and if you feel she should be home, then do it.

I send mine in with a cold..they can manage ok

It really depends how bad the cold is. A few sniffles and a blocked nose I’d send them in, sneezing and coughing everywhere I’d keep at home.

When my DD was little she would always vomit with a cold too. I would keep her off school irregardless. Hope your little one feels better soon.

I would send mine in if I was confident they wouldn't vomit at school.

Colds; snotty, few coughs, I'd dose with Calpol before school and send in.

If they felt dreadful, like you can in the midst of a bad cold, I'd keep them off.

I always tell my kids that if they're ill in the morning, we will reassess at 10.30 and see if they're ok to go to school for the rest of the day. Would this work if your dd is only a bit sick in the morning?

I tend to send to school with a cold unless they seriously can't get out of bed or are suffering with a bad headache with the cold symptoms. Just send plenty of tissues!

It depends. Snuffle, no.

However, last week my LO had a cold and was totally wiped out. Stayed on the sofa all day, which is unheard of for her. In the end, she just spent 3 days falling asleep and feeling rough on the sofa and snotting everywhere. She's usually super active.

Some schools really push because of the attendance figures. In the olden days, people used to 'recuperate' which never happens now. In my experience, my older child usually bounces back fairly quickly but the younger one needs a little more time- other wise she just gets ill again.

I think the 'non-answer' is you know your child the best.

My two dc have been in for the past 2 weeks with a cold. He was well enough for school. No fever, just snot and a bit of a cough. I tested ds for covid yesterday as I suddenly felt felt unwell and tested positive. He's positive too.

At 6 definitely. I dither with my 10 year old because she's that bit older so will miss more, so tend to send her in now. Also they generally now have better hygiene so are less likely to spread it and hopefully less likely to pick something else up.
