To be concerned by these symptoms?

These symptoms started suddenly about 6 days ago. I don't know if all of them are connected.

Number 1 (probably not relevant) - I have been having really, really vivid and life like dreams that I struggle to tell the difference between whether it's something that's actually happened or just a dream.

Number 2 - my speech is not how it usually is. I am struggling to find the words I want and am stuttering. For instance, my mind thinks 'when are we going for dinner?' I will say, 'when are we going for garage' completely random. Happening at least every hour. Stuttering as well when I've never struggled with that.

Number 3 - my right arm has started getting pins and needles, not constantly but at least twice a day, even if I'm moving around (so not when I wake up in the morning and have slept on it funny).

Cognitive thinking all normal, feel tired but that is usual for me due to type 2 diabetes. I am overweight but not morbidly so. I am a 30 year old woman.

AIBU to worry about these symptoms all together?

It sounds neurological. Diabetes increases the risk of a stroke in women by six times.
It needs checking out urgently. I'd head to A&E.

Raumasaur · 09/10/2022 21:21

OP, you really need to get to A and E, I am sorry it's your daughter's birthday. I would skip 111 unless you need an ambulance and go straight to your nearest A and E with someone else driving you, or by taxi.

Please do not drive yourself.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 09/10/2022 20:24

My mum had #2, they assumed mini strokes, it was terminal brain cancer.

When you get replies like this, I can’t help but feel OPs must be mad seeking ‘reassurance’ from this forum.

Raumasaur · 09/10/2022 22:07

@Herejustforthisone honestly, the OP really does need to take this seriously and get to A and E - brain tumours are within the causes that may be creating those symptoms, and whilst that is scary, it's really, really important she gets checked out tonight rather than waiting until tomorrow.

ToooMuchToDo · 09/10/2022 22:12

OP, I don't want to worry you, but those symptoms are big red flags for something brain related. Maybe TIA (which is a mini stroke) or something worse. Of course, it might be something minor like an ear problem or infection, but definitely best to get checked as soon as possible I'd say. Please 💐💐

I get that, but maybe I’m just in possession of medical knowledge but it would seem obvious to me that this was a neurological concern, and so exposing yourself further to that pointless emotion of worry, doesn’t make sense.

The OP knows it’s something that needs investigation, she’s seeing the doctor tomorrow.

Herejustforthisone · 09/10/2022 22:36

That’s not to say I don’t agree with her calling 111, I do. It could be a TIA, it could be a lesion on the brain, but these are unlikely due to age and rapid onset of symptoms, but it’s more likely to be viral, an infection or a deficiency.

It’s just responses like ‘my mum had that, she was dead within the hour,’ (hyperbole for illustrative effect) won’t actually help the OP in any way and will likely just leave her sick with worry.

Mischance · 09/10/2022 22:39

It really does sound as though the symptoms are neurological in origin, but the cause needs determining - I am very glad you are arranging to see your GP. Please take care driving as your symptoms are likely to make that less safe - if someone could take you then that would be by far the best option.

I hope that you get to the bottom of this quickly and send good wishes.

Cw112 · 09/10/2022 22:40

Is your diabetes well controlled? Could also be signs of a hypo? Deffo make an appointment with your gp to talk about it and maybe bring a wee list of your symptoms with you to show them if you find you're forgetful but if it gets worse suddenly then yeah I'd contact emergency doc or a and e.

Agree with this. The internet is a wonderful invention, but seeking out medical advice on it is just diving into an anxiety wormhole.
(Speaking from bitter personal experience)

Raumasaur · 10/10/2022 08:42

@Herejustforthisone there are some neurological symptoms which can be stable and then rapidly deteriorate - like a TIA becoming a Stroke - or any other brain bleed, MS treatment should be given within the first few days, sometimes pressure increases and surgery is needed - that is why the OP should go straight to A and E.

OP I hope you are OK and have been seen.

legophoenix · 10/10/2022 12:24

Hope you managed to speak to a doctor OP. Let us know how you got on x

Your thread reminded me of this one, I know your symptoms aren’t all the same but the numbness part and there might be something helpful to you on there that’s been suggested.

I didn’t dispute that. I’m just saying that the repulses such as o illustrates above cannot be, in any way helpful.

Herejustforthisone · 10/10/2022 14:25

Responses such as I illustrated…

Typos.

Riverlee · 10/10/2022 16:33

Op - hope you managed to speak to the gp or hospital and got assessed.

teaandcats · 10/10/2022 17:11

As others have mentioned, you need medical attention ASAP.

if a stroke (or other obvious cause) is ruled out get your B12 levels checked, as a B12 deficiency can cause neurological symptoms like you describe.

Notjusta · 10/10/2022 17:31

Just to clarify at TIA stands for transient ischemic attack. Transient being the operative word. It means the symptoms only last a short time and pretty much go away again. The fact OP still has symptoms suggest it's not a TIA.

OP I would call 111 in the first instance. They probably will refer to you to A&E but it's worth calling just in case they are worried it's a stroke and want you to go to specific stroke unit as not all A&Es specialise in stroke care.

starynight63 · 10/10/2022 17:36

Really hope you're ok OP and would defo suggest 111 or gp.
Is there any chance you could be pregnant? I also had these symptoms when I was pregnant with my second child and thought something was wrong (had a lot going on so had completely missed my period being late etc)

Just something else to consider xx

merrymerrymonthofmay · 11/10/2022 21:07

Hi all,

Sorry for taking a while in updating. Feeling a bit stupid. I went to A and E and they did bloody, scans and some other tests (asking certain questions etc). Nothing was showing on scans so they've put it down to anxiety/stress.

I suppose I have been under a bit of stress lately but it's nothing I haven't experienced before. The symptoms seemed to have eased though since then so maybe I was hyper focused and worried about them.

OP posts:
Riverlee · 11/10/2022 21:13

Glad you’re well. Better to be safe than sorry.

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 11/10/2022 21:38

I had the same symptoms. Rushed in for a CT scan and lumbar puncture. Mine was hemiplegic migraines which present as stroke like symptoms. Took a good while to get it fully under control but fingers crossed I haven't had a bad episode in 4 years

legophoenix · 12/10/2022 10:13

Glad to hear that you're ok. Do try and get some help for your stress if you can x
