To wonder why there’s so much talk on politics on mumsnet?

Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s important to know what’s going on in the world and I’m as angry at the government as the next woman…

But sometimes it’s nice to come on mumsnet for a bit of escapism, and the lighter hearted topics…

Am I alone here?

@MarshaBradyo , like you, I'm a regular on MN politics threads and we seem to start from a similar point of view, mostly. In the last few months, I have become very disillusioned with die hard Tories. I still believe we need sensible, pragmatic economic and fiscal policies if for no other reason than that the City is a major contributor to the balance of payments and GDP (the UK is really good at this stuff) but we also need an acknowledgement that the whole economy stands or falls on the down-up judgement.

Are the politicians today really so daft that they cannot see that 10 million Janets and Johns who work in Tesco, manufacturing, the NHS, or care homes need to earn enough to feed their kids, put a roof over their family head and keep them warm-ish, and still have a bit put by for Christmas and car repairs? A bit on top might mean a family holiday next summer. Right now, there seems to be a complete blind spot in the centre of the mirror. The very very deprived will always need help, and the very well off can always get by on their own brilliance, but producing a fair playing field for everyone in between, without making an exhibition of ourselves globally doesn't sound a huge ask... or is it?

Oddly, they’re not much in evidence at the moment. I completely agree with the rest of your post.

No@Blossomtoes , regardless of our (slight) differences, we are firmly in the middle, for the majority.

@AmaryllisNightAndDay 🤣 Classic!

StarmanBobby · 17/10/2022 22:35

Liz, if that’s you it’s not going to work doll!
Your government is tanking our economy, destroying our beloved NHS, gutting our state schools of resources… we’re not going to look over there at the shiny object and laugh at MIL threads…
we’re going to pay attention, then kick you and your Eton pals and assorted fuckwits out of power…

Excellent! Shame there's no otter though.

Oh no. I hope political discussions aren't all going to be shunted off to another board.

Metabigot · 18/10/2022 11:53

Because sadly our current political situation is like a bad episode of the thick of it.

It shouldn't be the soap opera it is, but there's a lot of drama and plot twists and turns which makes it good discussion fodder for forums like MN

Personally I think its great to have intelligent debate. I hope the newspapers pick the threads up. I hope the rancid criminals that run the country pick up these threads so they can feel us plebs dissent.
Worrying about which celeb lost weight quickest, which home style trend is on, or god forbid a how to define middle class thread all pale into the ether when people are headed for a truly awful pandemic?
When we are all poor, barely surviving cold and underfed, costing the country even more strain is that really the time to start talking politics? But looking forward to fluffy kitten threads...
