What is this? DS tummy issues and fever

Will start by saying that I do have health anxiety, anyone who has seen my previous posts will know that. It's come from the DC being poorly soo much over the last couple of years.

I've tried googling about this and nothing comes up so I thought I would try asking some wise mumsnetters instead!

DS is 3, has been at nursery all week. On Wednesday night he started asking to go to the toilet for a poop constantly but couldn't go. Checked on him in the night and he had done a tiny one in his pants. Kept saying for the next couple of days that he needed to go to the toilet but couldn't do more than a tiny bit each time. Then last night he started getting a fever. He feels really hot tonight and is saying his tummy hurts. He hasn't eaten much since last night, despite us offering him lots of his favourite things.

Over the week he has eaten quite a lot of high fibre food as I wanted to try and help him go but it hasn't seemed to help. So now he is basically constipated, says his tummy hurts and has a high fever.

Can constipation cause a fever?

No advice but my son had this exact thing a few weeks ago. He was never constipated in the past but started with constipation, prunes and laxities didn't help and then a really high fever for five days. I ended up in a&e twice and they advised a viral infection. He is also 3.

I think I’d call 111. How high is his fever?

Ah ok maybe it is some kind of viral infection going round then!

39.3 at its highest which is very high for him as he never gets high fevers

You tested for Covid? My son had similar symptoms last week and a positive test today. Hope he gets well soon Flowers

Test for covid. V commonly affects kids tummies as their major glands are there.

I haven't but that would probably be a good shout as I've just ordered myself a covid test due to waking up feeling like I've got the flu

I'm sure I've read that once they're constipated that too much fibre can start adding to the problem rather than helping.

I'd go to a pharmacy tomorrow and ask their advice re getting things moving.

The temperature could be unrelated to the tummy issue. Is he weeing as normal?

Is constipation a sign of chicken pox?

I've had something similar with my 9yr old. Off school with a high temp, no appetite, not eating much. Started complaining of a very sore tummy, I had mild panic it could be appendicitis. After a while temperature went down, sore tummy went away. She told me she'd went to the toilet and done a massive poo.

So in this instance I believe constipation caused her temp & illness but might not always be the cause.

We had a week of tummy pain and fever, no other real symptoms. Turned out to be tonsillitis (despite DS never complaining about his throat!) Antibiotics cleared it up.

Apparently it's very common with little ones so worth looking out for.
