Male Dr refusing menopause blood test

TwitchyJerk · 08/10/2022 11:55

I've been unwell with suspected c.f.s and mainly seeing a female Dr who, along with other things, asked me to change my contraceptive pill so that (after 6 weeks) I can have a blood test for early menopause. This was 6 weeks ago.

I saw the c.f.s specialist this week who requested other blood tests, and now that I've been on the new pill for 6 week's I talked to g.p receptionist about getting both bloods done together. Receptionist spoke to my named Dr and called me back to say they don't usually test for menopause without symptoms. I tell her and she tells Dr that I do have symptoms and I don't believe im having early menopause but the other Dr told me to switch pill so I can take the blood test. I've been told I now have to have an appointment in 3 weeks with Dr that requested the test.

This is stupid and annoying right? Female Dr isn't going to suddenly change her mind about wanting this ruled out. I will be wasting one of her appointments and another blood test appointment. Not to mention its hard for me to go out of the house because I'm very ill. Grr.

How old are you ?

The female GP should have written in the medical notes that a blood test was required. The female GP should have also prepared a bloods form for that test ready for when it was required.
If she hasn't, the male GP has to make his own assessment based in your symptoms and history. GPs do differ in their conclusions.
Definitely do speak with female GP.

GPs do differ in their conclusions. Yes. Especially male ones, when it comes to anything to do with hormonal problems, the menopause or associated symptoms. They think we should just go away and put up with it.

The only advice I can give is that I had symptoms at 43 and a blood test was negative. By 45 I was going for 8/9 months with a period and had my last one at 48/49. It isn't an exact science it seems.

Can you email the female doctor, instead of waiting for the appointment?

OldEnoughToHaveReadBunty · 08/10/2022 13:14

As above, it's a real shame the female GP didn't clearly document the need for a blood test and add the request form to your notes. If she had, the second GP would not have needed to be asked.

Yes it's a good idea to get the message to the female dr, and she should have put it on my notes. I'm 30, but older than my mum was when she had early menopause. Thanks!
