To worry about burning itching breast?

Hi all, hoping this isn’t TMI but worked myself into a state the last 48 hours and could do with some talking down/ options.

For context I’m mid 30’s, no children, definitely not pregnant(!)

For 2 days now I’ve had a burning sensation in one of my breasts which feels deep within and an itching feeling on the surface. No external changes like skin differences, nipple or discharge. I thought there might be a small rash but think it’s just where I’ve been rubbing the itch.

Does this sound like anything obvious?

I spoke to an online GP who has given me a referral to have a breast screening so waiting for that to be booked in but any ideas in the mean time?

You've done the right thing OP. Wait for your screening and try to distract yourself in the meantime. The breast screening centres age excellent and will work out whatever it is. Could just be hormonal sensitivity but does need to be checked. Best of luck.

Thank you for your supportive message.

Actually didn’t mention I started my period earlier in the week which on occasion causes a little tenderness but generally in the week before not part way through.

Hormones have a lot to answer for!

I was going to say hormones! No harm in a trip to the clinic for reassurance

I had shingles in the summer and it started exactly like that. Deep burning pain and an intense itch but nothing to see on the skin, really sensitive to touch. It could be that. Have also had breast cancer twice and definitely no itching involved either time. Hope all is ok.

I’m not sure if I’m going the quickest route as I’m booking via my private health insurance and the next available appointment is in 2 weeks. Does anyone know if NHS would be quicker?

Possibly a daft question as I know how dreadful the waiting times are for appointments but I’ve no benchmark for timescales.

I was going to say internal shingles. There is nothing to show on the outside.

Glad you are being checked. The only other thing I can think of is ‘breast thrush’ which can cause burning and itching. I’ve never had it but a quick google suggests you can get it when not breastfeeding.

I’m sorry to hear you have suffered breast cancer twice, I hope you are/ have recovered and continue to do so.

Interesting, I’ve had shingles before and it didn’t present a rash then either. I would be less concerned if it were BOTH breasts but it’s just so concentrated on one.

Ive been generally a little under the weather the past week so could be related.

I had a health thing recently and the nhs was actually quicker. I’d try both.

I’d not seen this down my Google rabbit role. I’ll take a read thank you.

I fully appreciate I’m not helping myself by self-diagnosing on the internet but I’m only human!
