New job 6 week rota help

I'm starting a new job as part-time Receptionist at a Retirement Village. I will have 1/2 shifts per week which vary in patterns. I will be given a 6 weekly rota. My question is to anyone who has done shift patterns before (I haven't) how do you plan your life in advance of 6 weeks, ie dental/hair appointments just general life admin?? I didn't really think much of it prior to accepting the job as I'm fairly flexible, but realistically I do like to plan certain things such as appointments and friend meet ups etc. Any advice appreciated on how you worked it all out! TIA

6 weeks is quite a long shift rota, you should be fine for booking dentist appointments and meeting up with a friend. Those things aren’t usually planned over 6 weeks ahead.
If there is something you need to do that you absolutely cannot change the appointment date and it’s a day you are due to work you either book the day as annual leave in advance or try to swap the shift.

Well you need to wait for the rota and then book your appointments accordingly. Also if you have a specific appointment you maybe able to request a different shift.

If you are given 6 weeks notice at a time, mine are the same it’s easy , you know exactly where you are every day

Toddlerteaplease · 07/10/2022 22:23

Are you allowed to request days off? I much prefer shift work because of the flexibility it gives you.

mogsrus · 07/10/2022 22:28

Before our rota is done we all get asked if any particular days off are required, then it gets worked out & if something gets in the way of life we just swap with someone. It’s really that simple. Worked for me for 10 years

We just plan things at my work and then request that day off on the (weekly) rota. I dream of a 6 week one, we are often phoning on a Sunday to find out if we're in the next day Hmm

You have to be having a Laugh. You can't plan your life around 6 weeks notice of your shifts?!

Most people get a one to two week rota max and manage fine.

In jobs with 2-4 week shift rotas like this, many managers usually do what is usually called 'a request book' in which any member of staff can put a request in for any one, two, or three days, or week they needed off. Most 'requests' are adhered to.

And then, when the rota is done for the following three or four weeks, the manager of the shift would not put that particular staff member in for those few days they'd requested off. Not really that difficult.

6 weeks notice and you only work one or two days a week? I'm sure you'll be fine!

ChampagneCamping · 07/10/2022 22:46

chat to the person making the rotas and ask which day of the week your likely to be needed. It’s likely your hours will be slotted in around existing staff initially. Explain you’d like to have a regular set day free each week for appointments.

it’s likely there will be some routine of sort’s

OP means if she has an appointment or something planned more than 6 weeks away, totally feasible. My private dentist and hygienist appointments need more than 6 weeks notice and friend meetups can be planned way in advance.
Hopefully you'll be able to swap with colleagues or tell the rota organiser about appointments.

Exactly this.
My dentist appointments are in advance of 6 weeks, as are hair appointments. Thanks for the replies everyone!
