Cutting down on the number of rooms being used this Winter
dottypotter · 07/10/2022 21:56
Are you asking the family etc, to go in one or two rooms this winter instead of all being in separate rooms with heating and lighting on.
Having to think more now.
Is it necessary for everyone to be on different rooms using energy especially if say the TV is on in the main room?
Am I being unreasonable?

Well there is only me and DH, so we are already in the same room.
Also, would the heating not be on in all rooms anyway?
And if the kids have got phones/laptops on, in the lounge, it's the same as if they have them on in the bedroom.
All you would be saving is a light.
Perfect28 · 07/10/2022 22:06
We will definitely be turning the radiators off in most rooms in the house.
mogsrus · 07/10/2022 22:14
Nope, if the heating is on it’s on. All rads have stats and unoccupied rooms are turned right down low.the water is going that way so it may as well do the cycle through the rad as not. As of yet the house is too warm for heating
LoveBluey · 07/10/2022 22:19
I don't have a big enough house for this to be a problem. We only have the kitchen and one reception room so nope no changes. Turns out having a small house had its benefits after all!
Elphame · 07/10/2022 22:20
I've turned down the radiator thermostats to frost setting in all the unused rooms already but I've yet to put the heating on.
We're just using the coal fire in the sitting room at the moment and tonight was the first night we've lit that.

We all tend to congregate in one room in the evening anyway, and at about 8pm we lock the outside door, which naturally leads to closing the living room door to keep the heat in, and putting the other lights out.

Terrible idea, and will not save gas.
luxxlisbon · 07/10/2022 22:23
Doesn’t seem worth the tiny saving of a light bulb or two compared to the micromanaging of daily life.
Wouldn’t you have the radiators on in your children’s bedroom anyway?
TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 07/10/2022 22:25
I'd see how much more expensive it is to have all the occupied rooms rads on compared to just the living room. Then decide. If they're environmentally concerned I'd ask them what they think, if they're not I'd just put on the living room rad, they'll either migrate to the heat or claim a few throws to hide under💁🏻♀️
TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/10/2022 22:25
I am thinking of closing the East wing. That ballroom is a bugger to heat.
Untitledsquatboulder · 07/10/2022 22:25
Heating goes on for an hour morning and evening. Beyond that intend only to heat one room, so if they want to be warm they'll need to gather round. But the kids bedrooms are the warmest in the house so I suspect they'll still use them a lot (teens).

No, good idea, it will save gas.
Multiple reliable sources confirm this.
Bluevelvetsofa · 07/10/2022 22:31
Spare rooms will not have radiators on. The thermostats in all other rooms will be turned down. Throws, thick socks and a heated throw (if there’s electricity)
Heating hasn’t been on yet. We’re usually in the south facing room during the day and there’s a fire in the living room, if we need it.
AlwaysLatte · 07/10/2022 22:35
We've got thermostats on each radiator so when we come to put the heating on (very mild here at the moment)
dottypotter · 07/10/2022 22:37
Sorry meant tvs as well.
DH and I like to watch different programmes in different rooms which means extra tv and light on.
AlwaysLatte · 07/10/2022 22:38
Oops hit send too soon. When the heating goes on we'll turn off the ones in unused rooms (ie spare bedroom and annexe) but not in rooms we use. We're using the log burner a lot though and the teens have been coming down more to enjoy that.
PrincessButtercupToo · 07/10/2022 22:41
We’ve got the Honeywell radiator thermostats installed that let us choose which radiators come on when, and to which temperature.
In effect this means we only heat the rooms that are being used when we are using them.
You do need to keep the doors closed to make the most of this.

I won't use the west wing until at least next June.
Quite. We might only use our London house and keep the heating off in both country Manor Houses. Although it might be frightfully cold for the butler and chamber maids. The kitchen staff are usually kept warm by the fires.

I've been thinking this might be the year to buy a four poster bed

We have quite a big open plan living room/ kitchen area which is quite difficult to heat and keep warm in the winter, great in the summer but cold in the winter. We have a small back room which we're currently renovating ( trying to) and the plan is to use that room as a cosy snug with an oil radiator when it's cold rather than try to heat the big room with gas that costs a fortune.
