To think worsening behaviour in school is due to the size of children these days?

Obviously not the only reason, almost definitely not the main one, but certainly a big one I think. I have siblings a good couple decades younger than me, at 11 my sister is 5’7 (apparently the lower end of avg. height in her year), 14 y/o brother 6’4, both overweight and massive. I’m 5’3.

I do find it hard to imagine how teachers would be able to break up fights, or even properly confront bad behaviour if a pupil that big is known to be aggressive. Surely this must impact?

Who would collect that sort of data. Not everything has data.

It's a large claim made by the OP, so should be supported by something other than her perceptions.

Clue. There is no data. It is bollocks.

TeeBee · 08/10/2022 05:05

Judgmental bollocks from the OP.

Wait, wind back to the OP. Siblings, two decades younger, overweight, massive, apparently. Are these half siblings that you describe with such disdain? Might this be colouring your thoughts about behaviour in schools?

Of course they’re half siblings but I think they’re great! I was just trying to give an idea of their size. Don’t for a second think I’m not overweight Grin

5’7 was a typo but I meant 5’6. All her friends that I see are generally the same size or taller. Maybe I do live in a land of giants.

🤣🤣 so you were out by an inch and still think 5’ 6” is the lower end of average for an 11 year old?

You’re 🦇💩

Quartz2208 · 08/10/2022 21:25

DS is ten this week and 5 ft 3 and one of the easiest children to deal with at school.

The difficult ones are much smaller

You must live on Venus or something, if she's 167cm at 22 and she's one of the shortest.... 167cm is off the charts...

At 11*

00100001 · 09/10/2022 07:12

You're certain she's in the less than 0.4% of all 11 year olds for height?

She's taller than most women around her?

And indeed shorter than her peers???

It's just seems very unlikely.

Unless of course you actually meant 4'6/7".

I'm amazed you actually know the precise height of your siblings tbh. Why would you know that?

lannistunut · 09/10/2022 07:14

gassenhauer · 07/10/2022 19:51

of course, but defiance is something that needs to be challenged. As a teacher I’d be wary of challenging a student larger than me if I knew they would react physically (but then again that could well be why i’m not a teacher!)

But this has always been the way as people have been getting big each generation.

obsessedwithsleep · 09/10/2022 07:23

I'm a teacher and the average height of a year 7 girl is NOT 5 ft 7 😂😂😂 in fact I don't actually think I teach one year 7 or 8 who is this tall. Ditto 6ft4 at 14. These children are giants.

A friend's sister is a secondary school teacher. She was sexually assaulted by a male pupil a while back. It didn't get far, because he wasn't physically large or strong enough to overpower her. Had he been, things could have ended very differently ...

Yes but he didn't assault her because of his size did he?

Arbesque · 09/10/2022 08:26

It's more likely to be due to chaotic home lives, bad parenting and an increasing attitude that no one can tell off anyone else's child.
Also many parents have no respect for teachers anymore and kids are picking up this attitude.

Floydthebarber · 09/10/2022 08:30

I always read threads about bad behaviour getting worse and realise a lot of people grew up in nicer areas than I did! Blush

OoooohMatron · 09/10/2022 08:35

You're talking shite. 5.7 is not average height for 11yr olds, it would be very unusual.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 09/10/2022 08:37

You’re so right, its the fatties causing all the problems Hmm

Fairislefandango · 09/10/2022 09:27

Wow - is this thread still going? I've heard a lot of utter bollocks talked about school, teaching and education in my time, but this theory takes the biscuit!

Just the one? Surely these fatty fatty boom booms are taking at least 6???

Splutteramo · 09/10/2022 19:07

A 5’7 eleven year old is at the lower end of the average height of her class?? Does she go to school at the top of a beanstalk?

Splutteramo · 09/10/2022 19:11

My D.C. attend pretty ordinary state comprehensive schools where the kids are mostly incredibly well behaved, polite and there’s very little disruption despite the kids being all shapes and sizes.
they have great leadership, and good teachers . The height of the year 7 girls has nowt to do with anything.

When was the last time you were inside an inner city school?

Maybe the amount of teachers and teaching assistants leaving the profession.

OP it's certainly harder to fit the children into small classrooms now they are all taller. I do think feeling crammed in doesnt help peoples moods

AnnapurnaSanctuary · 09/10/2022 19:14

A friend of mine is a teacher in a school for kids who've been excluded from other schools. In other words he needs to be shit hot at discipline. He's small - around 5'1" I think - but he has that presence.
