NC for this

So I have just been ‘let go’ from a temporary seasonal job. The reason given is because that sales are down and they are having to cut down yet, I am the only person being permanently ‘cut’.

The training was completely unorganised and many of us, didn’t know what was going on. Now, if I don’t know what’s happening I don’t suffer in silence I always ask so maybe that was my mistake. We where not paid for training meaning not only won’t I be getting any money, but I have lost around £40 in various expenses. And To top it all off, on one of the training day (BTW I, along with one other person, were the only people that attended every training session!) They had me doing a task that was had nothing to do with my role, not my responsibility and ruined my best pair of boots.

Today (We open tomorrow) I received the text informing me of my dismissal, with the absolute cheek of
‘but could you be on stand by in case a spare is needed’. 🤬🤬
Text was sugar coated that others had been let go but after speaking to one of the other people I was told that, one person (themselves) where told not to come but only for tomorrow due to the train strikes and not being able to get in, and the other 2 (a couple) were never doing tomorrow but are still on board in another department (they are also the co directors, so doubt they have been ‘let go’).

I am now torn on what to do between the following options:

  1. Reply to the director, expressing my anger and feeling (in a calm profession way)
  2. Put a passive aggressive message in the group chat saying gutted I have been let go but
thinking them for opportunity and ‘fun times’, before then leaving the chat
  1. Just block the director, leave the group chat and move on
  2. Be even more of a doormat and agree to being a reserve.

Should mention that because this is casual work, no contact was signed and was to be paid cash in hand.

Just feel so used. I really struggle to get a job (unfortunately I do feel ableism plays a massive part) and really needed this money😒

Anyway please let me know how I should handle this because part of me doesn’t want to just leave it and I don’t want them
to think they can get away with treating anyone this way, thanks

Agree to be on reserve but when they need you, you suddenly can't do it?

Was thinking that, but I don’t think they will need me.

You lost me when you said it was cash in hand.
You're just as much of a chancer as they are.

ok without going into to much details I am an ‘actor’ in theory (hence the self employment).

i don’t own £1000 per year though acting at best between 500-800.

there is a reason why I’m not on universal credit, but I can’t really get into this as it’s a complete other thread (although it’s beginning to looks like I will have no choice either to be on it very soon anyway).

i Have learnt my lesson, and just have to accept it. Just sucks

Just to gently say if your sales income (the amount received before any expenses have been deducted) is over £1,000 you will need to register with HMRC as self employed and submit a tax return.

It is really shitty of them to require you to fork out for the costs associated with the training, including knackering your boots, and then dump you the night before. Hopefully you'll find something else though - it's nearly time for Christmas positions if nothing comes up sooner.

i didn’t ask to be paid cash in hand in fact I asked if I could be paid though bank in which they said no. I would love to get a permanent Secure job but unless anyone wants to give me one I have to take up work when I find it. I can assure you that I am not doing anything to deliberately screw over anyone. Also if you want to roast a ‘cleaner’ go and you don’t have to look far there’s one in number 10!

And I generally did not know that it was £1000 cut off not £12,000. As such I will now go onto the government website and start declaring. Doesn’t help that schools or colleges don’t teach kids about this, so surprisingly none of us know how the wheel world works.

I’m gutted for you, OP!

I hope something better comes along and you can tell them to shove their reserve offer up their arse.

And don’t be upset about the tax shirking comments. I’ve never had a cash in hand job, always been on PAYE since I was 15 but you don’t sound like a tax dodger to me.

Are you entitled to PIP?

No one's accused the op of tax shirking though

several people have pointed out the threshold is £1k. But I can't see anything directed at the op about dodging tax.

More like the company sounds shady as fuck.

I am self employed and work for others, how do folk think contractors and freelancers work?

One place I work for could stop giving me shifts with two weeks notice for any reason they fancy - I do have a contract, it's also up to me to ensure cover if I can't do shifts I have agreed to do, and there are no agreed min. hours per month.

Some folk do like to talk out of their arses, I am legitimately self employed and pay tax, despite the above.

OP - thats the lifestyle unfortunately, sort your self out registering as self employed and do your tax returns, you won't have anything to pay but it's best to be above board.

If you'd started a few years back you could have had WTC but there are no new claims, just UC and i suspect when WTC ends and everyone has to do UC, I will just suck it up and not bother too as UC is such a pain in the arse its not worth the money!

Did you read page 1 of the thread? At least four/five people have done just that, accusing her of doing something illegal, accusing her of being as much of a CF as the company she'd be working for...
