AIBU to think that beauty advent calendars agave become a horrible representation of this who ‘have’ and those who ‘don’t’

The price of some of these calendars is crazy! I think everyone should have the right to buy what they want, but with the current state of things it feels like a really horrible waste of money. Yet built up to be a ‘must have’ etc etc.

Im probably being a grump and I do love beauty products/fashion, I just think some of these companies could donate some of the cover price to other causes as I’m sure the price markup is substantial.

I had one of the beauty boxes delivered for a few months. First few bought at discount, then I let them continue for far too long.
I'd much rather buy what I need (some shampoo and a bit of almond oil) than have loads of expensive useless stuff sat around. But I tried!
I get why people like the advent calendars but I've never felt an urge to buy them. I'd rather prioritise different treats.

I'm loving that my calendar makes me rich and poor people shouldn't be rubbing shoulders with me lest they be jealous of my 3ml sample of La Mer.

Hahahaha

I jumped on the bandwagon once, but won’t do it again. I ended up with loads of small things I’d never buy again and it was a waste of money. Crack on whoever thought if it makes you happy for the millisecond after you’ve opened it.

As I get older I realise that fewer things, but good quality, is the way to go.

Me too.

Free samples of cosmetics annoy me enough. I really wouldn’t pay hundreds for a load of samples and even full size random products. Cost wise some of them look pretty good value but I don’t need more random crap cluttering up my house. I know the products I like and when I need something new I would go for tailored recommendations rather than a lucky dip.

I’ve nothing against everyone else having them though!

So if I buy something expensive that some people can't afford then I am a show off?

user1487194234 · 07/10/2022 19:21

My DH buys me one every year
I love getting them

ChocChipOwl · 07/10/2022 19:24

I can't get on board with this at all. Some people have more money than other people and some people choose to spend their money on extravagant or luxury items. Can nobody have anything these days because it might offend someone poorer than them?

I wouldn't go for the £300+ advents but I usually get the liberty one. Why not? It's my money.

eltonjohnsglasses · 07/10/2022 19:24

People can buy what they like but agree a lot of it is marketing. I like products & not adverse to spending £££ on them however I don't really get the expensive calendars because I would feel annoyed if I didn't like the stuff.

KitsyWitsy · 07/10/2022 19:25

I have been getting the Elemis one every other year. I use all the products and love them. I really enjoy the calendar.

Or some people just enjoy looking after their skin and body? I suspect most people don't post about them on social media or talk at length about them to others.

You don't need an advent calendar to look after your skin or body though. I think you've missed my point which was that advent calendars themselves are not the issue.

I'm talking about the OP's sense that things are built up to be a must have or something that people "deserve" and if you don't have one you're somehow less or a "have not".

It's beauty marketing and the comparative element of social media to blame.

TakeTheLowRoad · 09/10/2022 08:23

Beauty calendars etc. are the reason why last sumner I was on some thread about downsizing your toiletries. 3 months later, I am still trying to use them up.

Squeezita · 09/10/2022 08:41

I think trips to Disneyland are money down the loo too

💯 agree.
