To keep the heating off

BelleMarionette · 06/10/2022 21:27

The heating has not been on since last winter, and I'm determined to have it off as long as possible, given:
a) the cost and
b) that gas is bought from Russia, which then funds a war

I'm in London, so weather still quite mild fortunately.

Do you have your heating off? How do you plan to keep it off if so?

Christ. I'm in my 50s and clearly remember ice.inside the window as a kid.
1 put a jumper on
2 use throws at night to sit and keep warm
3 candles light and warmth

but firstly buy decent thermals....I work outdoors and nolonger worry about the cold.
it's not really cold until your blue

PinkButtercups · 06/10/2022 22:35

Yes I've had it on a few times. Had it on tonight actually. It was quite chilly in here.

@Rosewaterblossom Not a mild, pleasant autumn day where a blanket is perfect sufficient.

Perfectly sufficient for you.

No, perfectly sufficient for most. It's a very relatively new thing for people to get a sniffle of slight cold and need to put heating on.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 06/10/2022 22:38

I’m still using a fan! Definitely no heating yet (Edinburgh). House has excellent insulation.

Xenia · 06/10/2022 22:38

Same here but it is not cold in London at all at present. After lunch I was on the sun bed for 15 minutes in underwear! Warm as toast. Hot sun shining into my south facing home office most of the day. (This is not the case for all the UK of course)

HighlandPony · 06/10/2022 22:39

I’m in the north east of Scotland. I like the cold. It’s a rare occasion when I fire up the back boiler and stick the heating on. Usually only if someone’s got a really bad cold or flu.

Stopsnowing · 06/10/2022 22:39

The only reason I have it on is because I have a lodger.

Goingonab33hunt · 06/10/2022 22:39

NW here and had it on a couple of times this week for half an hour to an hour as toddler was unwell. Now older DC are also poorly and need the heating on as their room is freezing.. I know we can't NOT put the heating on at all as it's impossible with young children but they frequently bring bugs home over the wintry months and I think realistically we will have to use it more than I'd hoped if they keep getting chest infections.

As we come out of winter and into spring, the temperatures are often 14/15 degrees in the daytime and no one bats an eyelid as they see it as days warming up and better days to come. Reverse those temperatures to autumn and suddenly everyone thinks that 14/15 is freezing to death so must heat their homes to above 17.

On a summers night if it were 15/16 degrees most people wouldn't put their heating on. Mould certainly wouldn't be an issue at temperatures just below 17, more like below 10 or 5 degrees.

Talking about internal temp. When it’s 15/16 outside in summer my house is still likely 25 inside as it’s been super heated during the day. To be 5 inside my house it would have been -10 outside for a week with no heating.

Rosewaterblossom · 06/10/2022 22:42

On a lighter note I'd love to know if the "put the heating on at a slight hint of chill" are the same people who post during the summer months looking forward to autumn with "cosy snuggly blankets, hot chocolate, brisk cold walks and candles " 😆

mindutopia · 06/10/2022 22:44

I don’t quite understand all the panic about it being cold and no one being able to afford to turn the heat on. It’s still like 15c outside. We don’t ever put the heat on this time of year. We have a big old cottage in a cold damp windy part of the UK. Heating goes on end of October early November.

rivermanblows · 06/10/2022 22:44

are you asking us for permission or something? why would not putting your heating on be unreasonable Confused.

GyozaGuiting · 06/10/2022 22:44

We have the heating set to come on at 17, and it’s hardly been on here! (Maybe once?)

It’s still really mild. I was roasting in a (ill judged) coat today.

Hagpie · 06/10/2022 22:47

I'm just outside London and we have the heating set to 19° only because the kids started complaining it was cold. Ours is an E rated 3 bed semi.

EllaB22 · 06/10/2022 22:47

I've had downstairs on for an hour here and there but not upstairs yet. Brought out the extra blankets for bedtime for now.

SarahSissions · 06/10/2022 22:48

Not on yet and probably won’t be for another 6 weeks or so, I tend to heat November- February only

NCHammer2022 · 06/10/2022 22:50

Ours hasn’t been on yet and tbh it’s been fine. DD and DH have hot water bottles, we’ve got a couple of blankets for watching tv under and we all have slippers and hoodies for wearing in the house. Once it becomes unpleasant we’ll put it on. We tend to keep our house colder than a lot of people I know though, our “heating on” temperature is 18 degrees, MIL has hers at about 23 and I’m roasting in their house.

OneFrenchEgg · 06/10/2022 22:54

South east it goes on at 18 for an hour between 7-8 pm

justasking111 · 06/10/2022 22:54

Still warm and wet here in n Wales so no heating needed. DS in small Yorkshire village put the heating on tonight they were cold

LubaLuca · 06/10/2022 22:55

Christ. I'm in my 50s and clearly remember ice.inside the window as a kid...it's not really cold until your blue

Unashamed pride in self-induced suffering, that's what this country needs more of.

FacebookPhotos · 06/10/2022 22:57

I haven't put the heating on yet (NW England). But I haven't felt cold in the evenings either. I like sitting in a blanket and wear jumpers at this time of year anyway. I used to put the heating on for mornings, but I'm only in the house for about 25 mins after getting up so I'm fine to cope with feeling cold for a few minutes in between getting out of the shower and getting dressed.

Nanalisa60 · 06/10/2022 22:59

Even in the north east of Scotland it’s not really that cold yet, I have put in on for a hour or two a few time over the last few weeks ,but if it’s sunny my home warms up really quickly, I’m also happy to go to bed early we have big tv in bedroom. Go to try and keep it at 18 this winter. Have bought good thermal underwear for us both, and will dress for winter, gone are the days of shorts and T-shirts in the winter in this house. But it will get a lot darker and colder so have decided heating will be on from 12.30pm till 7.30pm this winter at 18 degrees.

Calmdown14 · 06/10/2022 23:04

All these threads have been eye opening for me that people previously put it so early.

We've always had the tattie holiday as our cut off (so at least mid if not end of October). Was beginning of November last year as it was quite mild.

And I live north of Aberdeen before anyone tells me there are variations across the country!

TheBirdintheCave · 06/10/2022 23:06

PlantDoctor · 06/10/2022 21:33

Put it on when your house gets under 17, as WHO says you're opening yourself up to respiratory infections, mould, and long-term repercussions below this.

Also, as PP says, we don't really use Russian gas.

Agreed 18 is our cut off point. Fortunately it hasn't dipped below 20 yet. Fingers crossed we can make it to November.
