Do teenagers still get acne?

TheFuckingDogs · 06/10/2022 20:50

My dc9 had a tiny spot on his nose today. He proudly told me he is becoming a Pre-nager!

got me to thinking though that I never actually see teens with acne anymore.
I had terrible acne as a young teen as did many of my peers.

I live near a college and never notice spotty teens.
Has a magic cure for acne been found since the mid 90s?!

Of course it hasn’t. They just have better make up than we had.

Magnalux · 06/10/2022 20:56

No I work in a secondary school it’s very common

lljkk · 06/10/2022 21:00

oral antibiotics are very commonly prescribed. 2 of DC are in their 20s & still on them.

TheFuckingDogs · 06/10/2022 21:01

Yeah I suppose the Collection 2000 foundation was pretty rubbish compared to the make up they get today

I see lots of teens with acne as well as your usual teenage spots. The "magic" is in the makeup. Thanks to social media, they know how to use the correct skincare and makeup products.

Parents take kids to the GPS and/or spend money on dermatologists round here.

Darbs76 · 06/10/2022 21:07

Of course they do. All of mine have had acne, my DD age 14 has it quite bad lately due to going on pill to help with anaemia. The gynocologist did say they have much better medication now for it but as the owner of two teenagers I can assure you they still get acne and always will with hormonal changes. Biology doesn’t change with the times but treatments improve

Mumofone2021 · 06/10/2022 21:10

Much better over the counter medication, and better access to help through the internet.
My daughter suffers and I was able to buy treatments via Amazon that my parents would have needed to have taken me to the doctor for. Her skin improved after a few weeks

When I was young we just had to get on with it and use clearasil. My parents didn’t see it as a problem.
when my children got acne I took them to the dr, tried a few different things but both ended up on tablets that cleared it up completely.

I’m in my mid 20s and I never had acne but I have constantly been moisturising with face since birth due to eczema. Teen’s definitely still get it but not a lot of them. Make up also helps a lot as well

Shiningstarr · 06/10/2022 21:13

My son's friend has acne, it's quite noticeable bless him.

AprilShowers23 · 06/10/2022 21:14

I haven't seen any bad cases for a while. But then make up is so much better now and skincare products available.
I had bad acne growing up but I wore cheap make up and used the worst cleanser/make up wipes that probably didn't help!

Mayflower18 · 06/10/2022 21:15

My teenager is 15 and gets the occasional spot, but nothing like I remember from school. He does have a couple of friends who suffer pretty badly though, so I think he’s just been lucky.

EyebrowsPluckedAndHisArseholeBleached · 06/10/2022 21:15

Doctors prescribe things commonly for it now. Doctors seem very open to helping with it now. My teen took antibiotics and then roaccutane. Clear skin within in a few months and hasn’t had a spot since.

dressingGowndiva · 06/10/2022 21:16

Nope they do. I work with a few teenage girls who have it quite badly.

NancyJoan · 06/10/2022 21:16

Harder for boys, I think. Some of my DD’s friends have got very marked skin, I hope it doesn’t scar.

notanothertakeaway · 06/10/2022 21:17

I think people are quicker to take medication now eg rooaketeen (not sure how it's spelt)

Roomba · 06/10/2022 21:23

DS1 went through a period of pretty bad acne when he was 14/15. It mostly coincided with the lockdown era, so it was hard to get a GP appointment and he was very reluctant to request anything for it. I didn't want to push it and make him feel like I thought he looked awful (I just felt sorry for him as it looked so painful!).

He has outgrown it now, bar the odd spot. Many of his friends experienced similar, some got antibiotics or roaccutane, some didn't. It is definitely still a common thing, though!

LynetteScavo · 06/10/2022 21:34

I think parents are quicker to take their teens to the GP these days than they were when I was a teen. Also, it's easier to Google what actually works and order it online (acnecide is very good for mild acne).

BusySittingDown · 07/10/2022 11:58

My 15 year old DD has AMAZING skin. She washes her face with just water and won't go near make up. It's flawless!

I, however, got my first spot at 10 years old and still suffer with breakouts at 39 😡. I spent my teens trying out all sorts of ointments and medications and face washes and covering with concealer.
