Exaggerating salary when applying for new job

Following on from previous thread about lies on CVs, just wondered whether people inflate their current salaries to get a pay rise?

I would say the vast majority do.

Testina · 06/10/2022 18:19

I wouldn’t put my salary on my CV 🤷🏻‍♀️

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/10/2022 18:21

No. I don't lie about my salary no do I lie on my c.v. Integrity matters. To some of us at least.

GasPanic · 06/10/2022 18:22

It's pretty silly because they will tell the moment you hand over your P45.

Whether they would terminate you for it IDK - depends whether you delivered during the probationary period I guess.

I've never given my current salary when going for a new job... I just state my salary expectation for the new job.

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 06/10/2022 18:37

I've never been asked for my current salary as an exact figure. I've just said a ballpark of what my package is and what my expectations are.

Leaving salary is a standard question on a reference request so seems a bit daft to lie about it.

Twiglets1 · 06/10/2022 19:02

In my family people always put the salary at the top of the scale even if they aren’t at the top of the scale yet and so far have always got away with it 🤷🏼‍♀️
It’s a plausible lie

InCheesusWeTrust · 06/10/2022 19:05

They ask it in some application forms. I added 5k on mine if they did.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 06/10/2022 19:24

I sometimes add a little bit. Depends on how much I want the role and the general vibe I’m getting from the company. I’d say more often than not, I add a bit and then negotiate for a bit more on top of that. Interestingly I don’t push for the max in the role though.

As I’ve moved up into senior leadership, it’s become less and less of an issue of worrying about proving it. The more senior you become, the more salary becomes a conversation rather than something I worry or hope I’ll reach.

I normally give the 'including benefits' value (and state that) ie. Including private health care etc.

Zippyzoppy · 07/10/2022 16:57

im never sure whether or not to include benefits that aren’t actual salary.
