AIBU?

£300 for a 2 night residential?!!!

DDs year 5 residential is costing £300 for 2 nights. Her last year's one cost £120 for the same number of nights. We could afford it but I'm annoyed at the value for money it's not abroad. She recently attended a 7 night one in the summer for £450 independently attended.

AIBU to think this is really bad value ?

Don’t pay if you aren’t happy

Without knowing what type of trip it is we have no idea if it’s value for money or not

Depends what they are doing. A two night residential In London including eating out, West end show, London Eye, dungeon, houses of Parliament etc plus train travel was £300. A two night residential at forest school was £180. Both good value I thought.

Depends what it is but I think they’re too expensive and schools should choose cheaper activities.

My nephew just went on a one night trip to PGL with secondary school and it was £140!

Schools generally go with the cheapest option they can find. They don't set the prices - it will be the cost of the venue and the transport there, to a large extent.

If it's too much, don't send your child. You are effectively complaining that prices have gone up a LOT since last year.

No shit, Sherlock.

Ours is £300 for 4 nights. So seems quite a lot comparatively.

Prices have gone up loads. Food, energy etc.

Ours is £280 for two nights but they are getting a lot of activities crammed in.

What do they get for the £300?

DS is yr 6 and we’ve just had the letter for their residential in June. £180 for two nights at an outdoors centre, so lots of canoeing, abseiling etc included. However, it all has to be paid by mid February, which seems very soon for people who may be struggling with the cost of living crisis. It will be a push for us, especially with Christmas.

It's North Wales activity camp stuff the trip was shortened from 4 nights to 2. My DD recently went to the same kind of trip in august independent so not school and it was £450 for 7 nights. She attended a similar one for 2 nights last year and it was £120. It's not London or the south east.

I might say no and send to the independent one again next year. I transport her anyway.

@Meili04

Interesting - ours is north wales activity camp stuff too… see my post above

If the cost of getting there (usually a coach) is included in the price of a trip, then you won't save anything by the trip being 2 nights and not 4 of course.

I think that is a phenomenal amount, and just reiterates what tremendous value all the Scout, Guide, BB, GB camps that go around around the country are. Thank you to all the Volunteers that give up their time to make them happen.

£180 is a very fair price and representative of rise in cost I'd be ok with a price of up to £200. £300 seems like a joke considering it was £120 last year.

DS's yr4 two night residential is £300 as well (local outdoor activity centre place). It does seem steep but it's just price increases, coach increases I suppose.

It's ok saying don't send them but it's hard to be the one whose child misses out and has to stay behind at school because you can't afford it (not us personally but does happen).

DSs junior school now does a trip like this every year going up in price each year to about £600 in yr6 for France or similar. Not sure they really need to go away on expensive trips every single year personally, it must be so tough for some families, esp with more than one child in school.

My dd's year 6 one has just been cancelled due to low ticket sales.

It was £390 for 2 nights at PGL, ( less than 5 miles from home, nowhere near London) parents had to do drop off and pick up to save on costs!

I have a feeling probably half of DDs classmates will be going comparatively we are quite well off. It's not a really an affluent school.

£300 is a joke for 2 nights!
