To ask how the hell to get the BO/sweat stink out of plastic???

Bought a second hand highchair today that was advertised as very good condition. Picked it up and to my horror it was absolutely filthy, dried crusty food all over and it stank so bad of body odour. The actual condition of the item is ok, as in its working, but bloody hell ive spent the whole day scrubbing it and cannot get the smell out of it. Honestly I wish I had just turned around and walked away but I figured it just needed a good clean!

so far I’ve tried steeping it in a bath of laundry detergent and washing up liquid and scrubbing (I mean arms deep) it, covering it in a bicarbonate soda paste and leaving it for an hour, steeping it in bleach and just scrubbed it with white vinegar and it still smells 😭 is there anything I can do to get this smell out?? Or should I just take this as a loss and lesson learned? The smell is overpowering, like you can smell it as soon as you enter the room. It is clean now at least.

can’t get my money back as stupidly I thought I had bought through eBay but she requested cash, I hadn’t realised she hadn’t accepted my offer so it wasn’t an official purchase through there. I do have her address but not much I can do there really 😭

I know iatu one for buying it anyway but I really did believe it just needed a good clean! £50 down the drain and I had to order new cushions for it anyway which was £40 😢 should have just bought new!

aibu to expect items to be cleaned before someone sells them??? Please someone tell me I can get rid of this smell!

Absolutely shameful to sell something in such a state.
I wouldn’t even give something away without cleaning it.

Same 🤢 I don't usually sell, just give straight to charity shop but I always make sure it's clean and in good condition, I'd never give away something I wouldn't be willing to use myself!
I can't believe how disgusting some people are, how are they not embarrassed??

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 09/10/2022 10:47

Get a refund on the cushions.
Use that money to buy the ikea one.
You’re actually no worse of than you thought you were going to be.

Stick the other in the garden for a week, wipe it down, and then donate. Move on.

There’s no chance you’re pregnant is there?

Half a cup of Napisan in a jug of boiling water, leave to cool for 15 minutes then wipe the highchair down. If the straps are detatchable took them off and soak them in the napisan mix for a couple of hours.

I used to use febreze on my teenage son's stinky hockey armour. I would then leave it outside in the fresh air. not saying it worked completely but it certainly helped a lot and there's no way a high chair could stink like hockey pads!!

Did their house smell when you collected it? Did the previous owner smell?

JoJo2306 · 09/10/2022 11:04

Why would a high chair smell of BO??

I’ve been reliably informed that wasting money on an expensive and ultimately unpractical high chair, often a great deal more than £50, and then getting the cheap IKEA one, is a rite of passage for many new mums.

OP, a slightly different scenario in your case, but it was sold as seen.

I did exactly this, bought some awful bulky padded Chicago monstrosity. DS was so tiny the tray was level with his nose. Obviously only discovered mistake after a couple of meals. Back to IKEA, then the Stokke chairs from toddler age to age 8/9.

NotMeNoNo · 09/10/2022 11:15

It might smell similar to BO but it will just be stale baby food/drink soaked into the vinyl.

DonnaBanana · 09/10/2022 11:19

If she says no, say you will report her to eBay and then take to small claims

Wind your neck in. If you’ve picked something up in person and the seller hasn’t lied about the item working, you’ve bought it. It’s a casual used item purchase, not a shop. People who demand refunds on Facebook Marketplace for silly reasons are the worst. You bought it, you saw it, it works, that’s the end of it.

£50 for a second hand high chair?!

Bin it, no way would I be putting my precious child in that.

dottiedodah · 09/10/2022 11:48

She paid cash on collection, not through eBay. So eBay will do nothing to help, as not an eBay purchase.
She had the chance to not but it when she saw it, but did so anyway. She has no comeback and has lost her money.

I'd never bother with anything other than an antilop, they are fantastic value.

I can understand why you're trying to resurrect this particular one though OP, esp for 50quid. Put it out in the garden/balcony for 24 hours. Then give it another going over with white vinegar. Good luck!

Yup! Paid £50 like a muppet 🫤 have tried contacting the woman but unsurprisingly she is ignoring my messages. Absolutely gutted as times are very tough (I know for everyone). I’ve tried the previous suggestions and even left it overnight steeping and it still smells. Really strange, I’m guessing it has something to do with the plastic breaking down? It has a manufacture date on it for 2014 so it’s quite old. Feel like an absolute twat. DH really not happy because now we have to buy another when we really don’t have the funds to. This has definitely put me off buying second hand!

My goodness, sorry but you have learned an expensive life lesson here. Always Google brand/photo/etc before offering a price to try and gauge the age of product. Inspect carefully- do not be afraid to leave it behind.

I've sold a number of second hand items. Always in very good condition, always have loads of people messaging- I tend to sell very cheaply to make sure the item goes quickly. You’ve had a bad experience, but largely down to your own handling of the matter. Chalk it up to experience. I’m sure the highchair will clean up, as pp have said, give it some time outdoors to air out.
