To dislike exercise

Sticktothetopic · 05/10/2022 17:05

I do a class twice a week.

And I hate it. I do it because I know it’s good for me but man I dread the days it’s on and I have to force myself not to look at my watch as I just desperately want it to be over.

But the other women seem to genuinely enjoy it.

Is anyone like me and just really isn’t into exercise? Or am I alone …

I love exercise but I hate organised exercise so I wouldn't do it.

I much prefer to go swimming/walking/even jogging round the park for pleasure.

UWhatNow · 05/10/2022 17:14

I’ve always hated exercise and can’t for the life of me fathom how people can get ‘addicted’ to it! Sweaty, out of breath, boring… nah not for me. I think we have low levels of whatever gives them a high (serotonin?) As I’ve got older I do appreciate the joys of walking which encompasses all the benefits of exercise with multitasking, exploring and it’s easy on the knees. Still can get boring though!

IglesiasPiggl · 05/10/2022 17:26

I think you need to find something that works for you.
For me, the main point of exercise is to increase my sense of wellbeing. Personalily, I like home workouts because I like the flexibility of doing it when it suits me, and being able to fart as much as I want! You could try something else like yoga or pilates, or maybe some core strength classes. It doesn't have to be sweaty and hardcore to be beneficial.

Rogue1001MNer · 05/10/2022 17:35

I'm a natural couch potato.

I exercise regularly because I'm the size of a house

I'm generally the worst person in the room at any kind of exercise I do.
But I do enjoy it.
And I sleep better, and it's good for me, even if I'm rubbish, which I am.

There's loads of different things out there. You just need to find the one you hate the least.

Solo activities if you hate groups (running or swimming)
The gym - they'll put a programme together for you.
Aerobics classes (find one that has music you enjoy)
Strength classes like HIIT or pump or kettle bells
Yoga or pilates

There's masses out there, you just have to find your best fit

Sticktothetopic · 05/10/2022 17:38

But they are all exercise Grin

IStandWithMaya · 05/10/2022 17:40

How about...

Ice skating lessons
Trampolining
Tap dancing class
A course at your local snow dome or dry ski slope?

Sticktothetopic · 05/10/2022 17:41

The problem is that they are too costly or prohibitively far away. That’s true of anything I might feasibly enjoy!

I hear you. I detest exercise. I hate the sweat, the energy outlay, whether alone or in a group I just really hate it.
The only time I have exercised and enjoyed the result was when I had an eating disorder and loved getting thinner. Obviously I was mentally unwell at the time too.
I do walk everywhere so I’m not inactive but I walk to get where I need to be, I walk the dog, I walk the children to the park etc I do not walk for pleasure.
Exercise would definitely feature in my hell loop!

Rainbowx · 05/10/2022 17:49

I used to love my local woman's only gym was such a fantastic time for me i looked great felt great etc ,it shut down then I had some cardiac events and more ! so now regrettably I sit on my fat arse lol!! I can't afford the gym but do love swimming. Yanbu op

Chicheguevara · 05/10/2022 17:56

I have joined, and left, more gyms than I can remember. I found, last year, one that was marketed at middle aged people. No mirrors, no judgement and it’s really inclusive. Everyone is supported and the old hands help the newbs. No machines either, it’s all classes like HIIT, or boxing (not sparring, just the training), free weights etc.

I have found the exercise that I loathe least. I also like cycling for ages. Jogging, swimming, aerobics etc., can do one. I joined a Zumba class once, not a successful enterprise for someone who doesn’t know her left from right. DS jokes that I only signed up because I thought it was a language class.

Hating exercise is fine, but all or any movement is good. I have days where walking the hounds is as good as it gets.

Mushroo · 05/10/2022 18:24

Ha I feel exactly the same. I love all the benefits of exercise like sleeping better, feeling fitter but I hate the actual exercise.

I’ve tried everything and settled on weights and yoga as what I hate the least, but I definitely don’t enjoy it. I do it first thing to get it out of the way.

I hate getting out of breath and sweaty, I hate group exercise, I hate dancing, I hate being outside if it’s raining so that rules out a lot. Also if I exercise in the evening getting changed and showered again seems such a waste of time. Also washing hair which is a big chore on its own.

I don’t understand how people can enjoy the doing of exercise. Walking is the only one I do enjoy.

Tomorrowisalatterday · 05/10/2022 18:26

I'm with you. For ages I believed the people who said that I just needed to find the right thing. I've tried everything, I just don't like it.

I had a breakthrough with exercise when I reset myself to think of it as a non negotiable like brushing my teeth, I don't expect to enjoy it, but it needs to happen

dirtyasadustpanlid · 05/10/2022 18:32

Hate it, walking, running, aerobics, spinning, swimming, fencing, gymnastics, mountain climbing, hillwalking, skiing, biking, rowing getting on machines in the gym. Anything that constitutes exercise.

HATE exercise with a passion.

Yeiscray · 05/10/2022 18:40

I used to love it, then I got fat and now it’s a vicious cycle (or lack of 😆). I’ve put on around 7 stone in 5 years with 3 little DC, I’m exhausted, fat and hate how red and lumpy I look when I exercise! I can’t for the life of me get back into the swing of things, but I’m 3 stone lighter and hoping walking is enough until I drop a bit more. It’s hard lugging around all this jelly!!!

Ash8463539 · 09/06/2023 17:55

I hate exercise for the sake of it. I never do gym or go for a run anymore.

I just try to make my day-to-day life as active as possible. I cycle to work, and to the shops, and walk for shorter journeys. I try going hiking when I can, because that’s just for the fun of it and doesn’t feel like exercise. Just build activity into your daily routine instead of making it something that you do for the sake of it.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/06/2023 18:31

I hate the sensation of being hot. I don't think the sweat glands on my head work properly, so I've got a mister thingy. But I like the way I feel afterwards, and I like the music.

HermioneWeasley · 09/06/2023 18:44

I don’t enjoy exercise. I have found exercise I don’t hate. I do it because I have to.

Hawkins0001 · 09/06/2023 18:46

I'm a mix, if it's at a gym then after a while id get unmotivated, however if it's eg walking various places then I'd be more motivated.

AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie · 09/06/2023 19:24

I find long distance running terminally insufferable and I really hate dance-y aerobics-y class efforts. I don’t like many mainstream team / competitive sports either.

I do, however, enjoy martial arts, solo interval / sprint training while I’m out with the dogs and riding horses (which is definitely aerobic exercise if you’re not just hacking gently). Aside from the horses, which are expensive, these are all free / cheap activities.

You either have to kiss a lot of sweaty frogs until you find a form of exercise you like, or you just have to pick the one you dislike least and keep on at it regardless. There are times I can’t be arsed, and I don’t enjoy being a hot sweaty mess afterwards either - but life’s just like that.

Densol57 · 09/06/2023 19:26

I absolutely hate exercise and the gym especially …… but for some reason I love aqua aerobics and go 45 minute classes five days a week 👍🏼

LegendsBeyond · 09/06/2023 19:26

How can you hate all exercise? You hate riding a bike, swimming, hiking, yoga, tennis. Bizarre.

BonjourCrisette · 09/06/2023 21:10

I don't like gyms. I hate classes. I don't like going for a bike ride and I loathe swimming. I hate any kind of game that involves a ball. I can't bear walking or hiking unless there's a good pub/café/shop/picnic involved.

I have found belatedly that I don't mind running. I'd rather not, but I want to be healthy so I run three times a week. But I wouldn't bother if it wasn't good for me. I'd rather read a book or watch a film or go out for a meal.

I hear you OP, solidarity.

Since I was a little kid I was that kid who suffered and struggled in PE, always running out of breath with aches and pains all over. I've always hated exercising from the bottom of my heart and I've tried everything: yoga, Pilates, dancing (got two left feet), the gym (boring), swimming (my hair goes green) and don't even talk to me about ball sports as I'm terrified of being hit by one. I like walking and that's about the size of it.
I do an aqua aerobics class once a week because like you I know I have to exercise but it all seems a monumental waste of my good time when I could be reading a good book. If reading was a sport I'd be an Olympic champion.

ThatFraggle · 09/06/2023 22:45

Once a week try something different. For a year.

The free and YouTube ones, do at least two times. E.g. everyone praises Yoga With Adrienne, but she's sometimes too chirpy for early morning me. Try a different person teaching.

Swimming, running, YouTube ballet fitness, hula hoop, clubbercise, Zumba, ice skating, pole-fitness, fencing, jogging, weights, tai-kwondo, netball, capoeira, aqua aerobics, lengths, Yoga, pilates, body balance, bums and tums, hockey.

For the group classes, if you don't like them try one more time with a different instructor.

At the end of the year, you would have tried 50 things. If you enjoyed zero, then you've got bigger issues, e.g. anhedonia.

Some will cost money, yes. But what will you end up paying for poor health if you don't find something you like and end up sedentary?

I sometimes do exercise videos with the sound off, and listening to an audiobook instead. That specific book is only for exercise. If I want to find out whodunnit, I need to follow along with the nice lady on screen and do some squats.

There's another one for cleaning, something else I hate. Hoovering doesn't get done because I can't hear the book...
