About two weeks ago I had a procedure at the dentist - one of the awful ones where they use some sort of chisel to file all the crap from your teeth. It was very sore and sensitive.

At the time I was starting with a small mouth ulcer - not unusual, I get them a lot when run down, time off the month etc.

But in the days following my dental appointment this mouth issue ballooned and became so so painful. It's the size of a thumb nail at the back of my throat and I've been taking paracetamol every four hours for the past week just to keep on top of the pain. Eating is a real struggle. I've got through two bottles of corsadyl and have also been using anbesol liquid which is great for temporary pain relief but hasn't cleared it up like I'd hoped.

I really don't want to have to resort to antibiotics as they make me poorly themselves. I just wondered if the severity of this mouth ulcer (I've honestly never had one like it!) could be due to germs from the dental procedure getting in it? Anyone have any experience of dental work causing issues like this?

No but I would try and get a gp appointment

LuckyLil · 05/10/2022 15:20

Have you considered going back to the dentist to check this isn't something else?

sallyloveschips · 05/10/2022 15:38

It definitely started as an ulcer. I've never had one this big that has lasted so long though :-/ that's why I was wondering about the dental work.

Could be a coincident. Go back to your dentist

CrunchyCarrot · 05/10/2022 15:46

For me, mouth ulcers are always, always stress-related, so in my case a stressful dental experience would make one get worse. I think 3 weeks is my record for a mouth ulcer. I rarely get them now, thankfully, they really are painful. I've never used antibiotics for one, though. I would not want to mess with my gut!

sallyloveschips · 05/10/2022 15:53

@CrunchyCarrot yeah mine tend to flare up when I'm stressed or run down. But I think the deep cleanse they did on my teeth obviously took off a lot of stuff that may have gotten into the beginnings of the ulcer and made it much worse. I've had them all my life so I know the symptoms but this is like a super ulcer. So big and painful and seems to be sticking around.

Have you tried rinsing your mouth with warm salt water?

Definitely do this in the meantime

I've had some monster ulcers in the past and gargling with boiled&cooled salt water twice a day makes a huge difference! Best ulcer treatment there is

Bobbleballbags · 05/10/2022 16:00

Maybe the dentist irritated a small ulcer when poking around in your mouth and has made it inflamed. I second/third the salty water. I've never had bad ulcers but that usually sorts mine out straight away. My ex used to buy stuff from the chemist that you put on ulcers and I think it forms a protective seal over it, so that's something you can try but I'd definitely give the salt water a go first.

MinnyMous · 05/10/2022 16:00

Go back to the dentist.

sallyloveschips · 05/10/2022 16:12

It's not very easy to get seen by the dentist. Even if they class this as an emergency which I doubt, I could still be waiting a few days at least.

Go to A&E - husband had this last year and it was an abscess. Most A&E depts have a dentist.

This isn't an abscess. It was a small ulcer before I went to the dentist. For whatever reason it's now huge and painful. But it's not an abscess. I've had one before and it wasn't like this.

I don't think a&e would thank me for going in with a mouth ulcer in the current climate. But I will need to see someone soon if it doesn't improve. I just want to avoid antibiotics if at all possible as they seriously upset my gut.

Definitely rinse mouth with salt water several times a day.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/10/2022 18:53

This WASN'T an abscess, doesn't mean it's not one now - could be all pussy underneath Flowers

RoomOfRequirement · 05/10/2022 18:54

Yes! I suffer with them occasionally but once had one on the side of my mouth which made that whole side of my face swell. It did eventually go away with salt water rinses but it was the worst one. I used oragel for the pain, it was the only thing that helped but I admit I used it a lot more than the recommended every 4 hours!

MistyRock · 05/10/2022 18:57

I had the most painful ulcer of my life a few years ago. Right in the side of my tongue and the width of a rubber on the end of a pencil. I could hardly speak, that side of my face swelled up, my ear hurt, and if I attempted to eat my heart would race so much that I felt like I'd have a heart attack. One of the most painful exp3if my life. I bought some ulcer treatment (not sure what it was as I was abroad) and I ended up taking antibiotics as I honestly couldn't cope with the level of pain. It took a while to eventually go and it took weeks for the mark in my tongue to go. I really feel for you Op. I'm not sure what caused mine. (I do have IBD).

MistyRock · 05/10/2022 18:58

Sorry about the typos.

WutheringShites86 · 05/10/2022 19:01

If its at the back of your throat it could be quinsy. That would need treatment ASAP. I had it as a child and it was horrendous. A shit GP left it untreated for a week and I eventually ended up in hospital with an abscess the size of a golf ball blocking my throat!
