To think renting as single mum is horrific

My bff is a single mum to two young boys. She works in a nursery and gets universal credits. She has a small dog who she got when she split with her husband and is her baby.

she’s lived in the same house for 6 years, rent paid every month on time etc.

the owner is selling their house and obviously she has to move. Between us we have rang 40 properties in this town and surrounding villages. Not one will accept her because she’s either on in universal credits and she has a dog.

the council rang today and said they suggest she takes anything and rehomes her dog because they will put her in a bnb for around 8 months.

I would have her dog, but I have a cat and a dog and 3 kids already, my husband isn’t keen.

I feel so bad for her. She’s lost weight, she looks an anxious mess.

:(

@Notanevillandlord I'm a single parent and I absolutely agree with you. God I won't ever just give up my council property it must be an absolute nightmare trying to find private.

vivainsomnia · Today 11:20 that is all well and true. It is a good thing you are put off renting to single parents who might be reliant on government benefits.

The way of the world is that the more desperate you are in life (however that manifest) the far far more likely it is that people will do you over, give you worse terms than other people, treat you like shit.

If it is not you vivainsomnia · Today 11:20 it will be someone else who will take advantage of people on benefits because that is what people are like. It could be benefits, it could be anything else (homeless, disabled etc) - they will charge that person double what they charge everyone else.

I applaud you not renting to single parents on benefits, at least it will not be you trying to exploit them. Leave that to the (many) other people who will.

Landlords now seek to restrict their tenants far more than they did in the past. Most don't even allow tenants to put up a picture in the home they are paying s fortune to live in. I'm not surprised most don't allow dogs.

The housing situation in GB is in a parlous state. Many of the elderly own houses worth fortunes, most of the young pay fortunes to live in other people's houses. It is a real mess and if I was young I'd be kicking up a hell of a fuss about it.

It is a shame that MN doesn't lead the charge for a better deal for the young and those that don't own houses.

I admire the passion for female spaces for women to feel safe in when they are out and about, but I do wish the same passion was shown to provide houses for women to actually live in.
