To go private to have a baby

TTC #2 for 7 months and two very early losses at 5 weeks in that time.

Now 3 months after last loss and another BFN so would seem while we conceived easily before our luck has run out.

One DS conceived easily first go 2 years ago.

Only issue I can see is that I was breastfeeding but stopped 2.5 months ago, and I am slightly hypothyroid (TSH of 3 but docs are medicating me to bring this under 2 so it is being dealt with) - we only know this as I demanded a blood test after second miscarriage - they said they wouldn't even medicate if we weren't TTC)

Husband thinks we should go private and get initial tests done.

I'm 34 he's 38 so he thinks we don't have loads of time left and I'm wondering if I agree.

Is it a good idea to go get initial tests done or are we being impatient and it's a waste of money at this stage?

I just feel so lost and confused. Any advice welcomed.

I mean it’s up to you really, but many women can’t get pregnant while breastfeeding.
It’s not a guarantee you can’t fall pregnant but for lots of women it does make it much more difficult so given that you only stopped breastfeeding 2 months ago paying for fertility tests seems a bit rushed.

Did you cycle whilst breastfeeding?

Lcb123 · 05/10/2022 13:35

Seems rushed if you only stopped breast feeding 2.5 months ago, I'd leave it longer

This is not medical advice as it’s probably not the best idea at all but I had an early loss at 10 weeks in May and I was just convinced it was my thyroid as been hypo for years, got pg again in August and my midwife wasn’t arsed about me being hypothyroid and it was a long long wait for a proper endocrine consult (I go once a year since being hypothyroid since age 23) my levels weren’t great but nhs aren’t bothered unless it’s literally sky high. Sooo I basically decided after my own research to take an extra dose of thyroxine every other day. Pregnancy went perfect I have a baby now and my levels have been low under 1 ever since. Now back on usual dose. If you’re going to go private I’d go to endocrine route first and see a private endocrinologist about your thyroid before you do fertility etc. Also breastfeeding can affect your thyroid levels!

Sorry for your losses. I would say waiting more than 3 months to conceive is normal, however the losses would concern me and if it's possible to investigate further, I would do it.

How close are you to 35? Nhs guidance for gp changes after that age.

3 months isn't long for trying and I say that as a women who has two children and two miscarriages in between.

After my 1st mc I did see a private gynae for treatment due to the nhs wait times for epu (one week to get first appointment).

At my last appointment she prescribed medication to boost my cycle to get pregnant. It worked. So that type of thing might be more helpful then more tests

I'd be under the guidance of an endocrinologist OP. Definitely don't leave this to your GP to manage. The thyroid is complicated and GPs miss a lot that an endocrinologist won't. My hunch is that sorting your thyroid will really make your TTC journey easier. I'd go privately and see a consultant endocrinologist if I were in your shoes.
