to think landlord should change their bloody address?

We've lived in this (rented) house for just under a year now and everything has been absolutely fine except the landlord seems to expect us to forward absolutely all their post. They used to live here themselves. I would not have an issue with this except they get really shirty if it isn't done within a week of us receiving it and I don't always have time or remember tbh. I feel like if it's that important just pay to have it forwarded like we did from our last place. They seem to still get EVERYTHING forwarded here, including HMRC and NHS letters etc, it's not just the odd bit of junk mail.

AIBU?

Start returning it to the post office marked not at this address.

isabelosullivanmamzelle · 04/10/2022 15:30

I have considered that tbh

I did once tentatively say did they not think it would be easier to pay to have it forwarded

I just can't understand why they wouldn't at least change their address with their bank and HMRC etc.

Sounds dodgy to me, especially the HMRC post. You know, seeing as being a landlord is a business.....

isabelosullivanmamzelle · 04/10/2022 15:34

I wondered if maybe they hadn't told their mortgage provider they were renting out the house

I would just return to post office and if they ask for mail, just say there isn't any.

isabelosullivanmamzelle · 04/10/2022 15:45

They said they "didn't want the expense" of paying to have their post forwarded. Have to admit that kind of incensed me given how much we pay for rent and the fact they live mortgage free in their new place 😅

I think you need to contact them again and say politely but firmly that you don't have the spare time to forward their post, so they need to pay to get it redirected by the post office.

It does sound dodgy, I wouldn't immediately start return to sendering it though as they sound like they could get really pissy and difficult if you do.

WallaceinAnderland · 04/10/2022 15:49

I would return it because the alternative is either keep having the nuisance of forwarding it or them having to come round and collect it. However, I have a low tolerance for this kind of arsery.

That was my first thought too. Also agree with @WallaceinAnderland that the tax angle may be a factor too.

Shortjanet · 04/10/2022 15:58

Sorry, it was @TallulahBetty who mentioned tax. Anyway, regardless of the rights and wrongs (probably more wrongs tbh...) I'd worry that dropping them in it would mean any mortgage or tax increase would be passed on to you. Doesn't make it right thou, does it? How annoying.

Blendiful · 04/10/2022 15:58

If you are paying rent they can't expect you to mess about with their post. It does sound dodgy like they haven't told someone or declared this if they still get all their mail there. I would be telling them they can arrange a suitable time with you via message to collect (when you are home and free to pass to them) or you will return to sender. I wouldn't be doing anything with it for them. They can come and collect it if they want it.

WahineToa · 04/10/2022 16:00

Oh my god we’ve been here two years and it’s still happening! It was a lot at first, including packages!! They don’t live far so wanted to pop in regularly for it, I said no I don’t want my LL round all the time. My DH was driving there to drop it off! The PO won’t do redirection anymore so is putting their address on and putting it in the post didn’t work. A few I’ve returned to sender but I’ve got a car insurance letter here right now. We’ve mentioned it and they say, oh we’ve done all that and people are sending to the wrong address but I know that’s not true. We are under no obligation to pass on their mail. I always pay for redirection and make sure everyone knows of my change of address. It isn’t that hard. I don’t know what else we can do other than simply bin it now its been so long

It’s definitely this. Buy to let mortgages are more expensive and onerous than home mortgages.

isabelosullivanmamzelle · 04/10/2022 16:03

I'd worry that dropping them in it would mean any mortgage or tax increase would be passed on to you.

We've just signed on for another year fixed term so they wouldn't be able to do that immediately.

Let them know that from x date you will return to sender. Then they have the choice of updating their address everywhere. Stop being their PA.

NyanBinaryJohn · 04/10/2022 19:23

Yeah, they don't have a buy to let mortgage.

Return to sender.
