Not much work to do

Has anyone had a job where there just wasn’t much work to do?

I started a new job 6 months ago and there really isn’t much to do. I think my manger overestimated what would be required when creating this role. It was part of someone else’s role and they were struggling because they had other things to do but it’s really not a full time role. I’ve flagged it to my manager a few times and he gives me odd bits and pieces to do but seems to be struggling to find anything substantial. Some of my other colleagues seem very busy and I’ve offered to help them out but haven’t really had anything from them either. It’s ok for now but just wondering how long for. Has anyone been a similar position?

In this position at the moment. Small company bought out by another located an hour away. I work two days and since having a super duper bit of software installed I could do everything in a day. Sometimes less as depends what the engineers have been doing.

I've mentioned it a couple of times and keep being told I will be having work passed to me by the other office but it's not appeared. I'm retiring in a few years so not wanting to jump ship so online courses don't really appeal. I'm usually alone in the building so always take a good book and I pad. Boring and sometimes soul destroying but better than starting over somewhere for much less money

I’d raise regularly with manager by email and in reviews. Spin positively - could I train to do x or y.
Volunteer for anything eg team representative on it project.
Sign up for any training. Look for external free training or any qualifications.

Interestingly I always wanted a job like this but when I got one it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Time dragged, by the time I'd done my work for the day and had 2 coffees it was only 10:30am! And I would for some reason get anxiety over my lack of 'doing anything'. In the end I moved sideways and began to 'create' work so it was fine, and I also did more training to up my skills but it's not the haven some people would imagine it to be.
