Would would you do about this cat?

For the past week or so cat has been meowing at my back door and trying to come inside. He is there now and comes every night meowing. The other night he was sheltered under my daughters slide from the room.

I found a Facebook post about him and he does have a home but the lady said he never goes back home because other people were feeding him. She said as soon as she gets him back in and then she lets him out and he doesn’t return.

I feel sorry for the cat when he is outside meowing, he was there for an hour the other night and he always seems to be out. I have seen him around the street a lot prior to him coming to mine. What would you do?

Nothing. Don’t feed him or encourage him. That’s the only way he will go home.

do you have a cat?

fairgame84 · 04/10/2022 09:22

Don't feed him or let him in. He has a home. Message his owner to collect him if you're worried about him.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 04/10/2022 09:24

Message her every time. She needs to collect him and try keep him him until his routine is hanging around home!
Poor dcat.

Threadkillacilla · 04/10/2022 09:24

He has a home and is fed. He's just being a cat.
I have a cat who sleeps outside, she's 23. I've tried everything but she won't stay in. She meows every time she passes the door but not to come in just an announcement that she's still alive.

eyeteevee · 04/10/2022 09:27

Just ignore him. Cats are dicks. He knows where he can go for food and shelter if he wants.

Hobbesmanc · 04/10/2022 10:04

My oldest cat goes off in a major strop all the time. If his bowl is moved, or he doesn't get an egg or |I look at him funny. He's off wowling around the neighbours begging for a new home- letting everyone know how badly he is treated.

They know to ignore his fibs and eventually he grudgingly returns and shits in the bath or breaks something to let us know he's home

Cats are total arseholes - that why we love them

Umbrellabee · 04/10/2022 10:36

Ignore him. If you start feeding him he will never go home. He has an owner who feeds and looks after him so is not a stray. He’s just chancing his arm! I’ve a cat that does this, he regularly wanders into neighbours houses but because they are sensible and don’t feed him he always comes back at least once a day.

FangsForTheMemory · 04/10/2022 10:41

It’s just possible that while he has a home, it’s not a good one. Does he look well fed? I’d message his owners every time he comes round and just keep an eye on how she behaves with him.

eyeteevee · 04/10/2022 10:44

I’d message his owners every time he comes round and just keep an eye on how she behaves with him.

Goodness me. Cats do this shit all the time. Are you expecting the owner to go round for an assessment? I would t move from my sofa and I would tell the person just to ignore the bloody thing.

Porcupineintherough · 04/10/2022 10:45

I'd ignore him secure in the knowledge that he has a home to go to if he chooses it. We have a similar cat in our neighbourhood, I even started a thread asking for advice as she was so desperate to get in I was worried (and I'm not a cat lover). Turns out she has a loving home but likes to go visiting a lot. Since we've rejected her she now spends a lot of time in the bar of the local sports centre.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 04/10/2022 10:52

I wouldn't ignore him, I'd give him some fuss, because who can resist some fluffy strokes. I wouldn't feed him though, even if he was claiming to be starving, because I know cats are massive liars about being starving.

Ximenean · 04/10/2022 10:55

Assuming he basically is not obviously underfed and mangy just persist with messaging the owner every time. At 15 min intervals if need be. Make it her problem and it won't carry on forever.

There are all sorts of possible reasons. Our cat used to forget how to use the cat flap, and cry to come in. Not the brightest.

GrumpyMummy123 · 04/10/2022 11:07

Ignore it. Spray with water, get a cat repellent, get a dog.... Whatever you do don't feed it or give it attention or it'll be moving in through the window without you realising and the other family will be devastated, children will be crying and everyone will think you're the dick! However, as much as I love cats they are cunning and they are the dicks and would kill their own grandmother to get their paws on that ham and comfy sofa.

Smittenasakitten · 04/10/2022 14:00

Thanks everyone. He is back again now pawing and meowing at my back door. I haven’t fed him before but he still keeps coming very regularly

Just ignore him, he's doing what cats do and looking for delicious things or a change in home scenery.
They say a cat has five homes I think it might be true.

If the car has made up it's mind not to live at a certain house, it's pretty difficult to persuade it otherwise.

I had a cat that decided it wanted to live in the house that it was born in (friends of mine). They didn't feed it, (although she did sneak in occasionally), but she refused to come back, and she got thinner and thinner. Their children were older than mine, and I think she just decided she didn't like my youngest (who didn't do anything to the car, but was loud and 'stompy'). We did everything we could, but she just did not want to be in our house.

I would keep an eye on it. As long as it seems fed and healthy, don't do anything more. But maybe, if it starts getting thin, speak again to the owner and see if you can come to an agreement. That's what happened in our case.

OoooohMatron · 04/10/2022 14:34

Ignore him, he's a chancer! I recently found out my cat had been pestering neighbours, despite being spoiled rotten at home.

Fe345fleur · 04/10/2022 15:03

Ignore him. He has a home. Our neighbour's cat acts like he's a sad homeless kitty, we lives next door so are fully aware that he isn't.

GrumpyMummy123 · 04/10/2022 15:18

I've now currently got my own cat meowing loudly at the door and looking like she's been locked out and making out shes not been fed for weeks.
However, it's just she's just too bloody lazy to walk round the side and come through the cat flap. She had food this morning and there's still biscuits in her bowl.

Backtoreality1 · 04/10/2022 15:23

water pistol to deter from back door
