to ask if anyone on a fixed rate energy deal has heard from their supplier

I'm with eon and locked into a fixed rate energy deal about 2 months ago. When the energy cap came in they updated their website to say they'd get in touch with fixed rate customers about how they would be affected - that was weeks ago, the energy cap has now kicked in and I'm none the wiser.

Eons website says that the new cap doesn't apply to people on a fixed rate, but the government website and MSE say it does, although they provide contradictory information as to how much discount it'll be. I've tried getting hold of Eon - spent ages on the phone and couldn't get through, tried their social media channels and no response.

When I took out the fixed rate it said if you want to leave at any point I could do so without penalty by emailing, but when I tried to do so they said they can't do it via email. Besides which I don't think it's unreasonable to want to know what my fixed rate now currently is post-cap before I decide whether to leave it or not!

So if anyone on a fixed rate has had any sense at all out of their provider that would be great!

I had this from British Gas on 29/09

We wrote to you earlier this month to let you know about the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) that was recently announced by the Government. From the 1st October, the unit cost of electricity and gas will be discounted. So for the average household, the cost of energy will be no more than £2,500 per year for the next two years.

Your energy prices aren’t changing, as your fixed tariff is still the cheapest option.

As your current fixed tariff is cheaper than the EPG, you’re best to stay on this until it ends on 31 January 2024. We’ll be in touch before your tariff ends to explain your options. And you’ll still be protected by the EPG as this is guaranteed until 30th September 2024. We hope this brings you a little peace of mind.

No and I've not thought about it. Just thought "oh that's good that we are fixed til next year. Good." Didn't know they could unfix u..

Scottish Power texted me last week:
”No action required: Your fixed tariff is priced below the Government Energy Price Guarantee, so you don't need to provide a meter reading on 30th Sep.”

Same situation no contact

We’re with eon and fixed similar to you. Had to phone them and just wait it out. Luckily DH works from home, so he rang the number, put it on speaker phone and waited the best part of four hours. Got it sorted though.

We are with eonNext and haven’t heard anything. Our electricity fixed price is higher than the new price cap but the gas is lower.

i think they have to lower the fixed price to equal the cap unless your fixed price is 17p over the cap in which case you would get 17p off per kWh.

i would like confirmation but I just assume I would be paying the price cap amount going forward.

278Newnames · 03/10/2022 20:47

@Aposterhasnoname what did he have to do on the phone? Was it not automatically adjusted?

Sagaris · 03/10/2022 20:47

Ours contacted us (SSE) by email to say they would be doubling our payments! DH pointed out to them we are on a fixed rate tariff, they then agreed it could stay the same.
Chancers! 🙄

Thank for the replied
@PanicAtTheDisco2000 and @EVHead - it sounds as though as your tariffs were cheaper than the price cap is now, so you're already on a good deal and don't need to change anything? Mine was slightly higher which is why I want to know!

It's also really uphelpful that they all keep referring to the 2500 average household cap - I'm not an average household so this is irrelevant to me, I just want to know the price per unit!

@Aposterhasnoname what was the result when it was sorted?

Just actually looked at the eonNext app and the electricity unit rate has gone down to 35.06p incl VAT. It was 39.9p previously.

@Aposterhasnoname what did he have to do on the phone? Was it not automatically adjusted?

No. He had to ask, insist actually, that we were put back onto the variable rate (and therefore the new cap)

@Aposterhasnoname what was the result when it was sorted?

We are now back on variable rate, and we got it backdated to the date we first emailed and asked, unsuccessfully, to put back onto it.
