to think Yr 1 school reading books shouldn't encourage playing at the local dump!

DD (6) just bought home a reading book called The Dump (Oxford Reading Tree), where on the 2nd page it says "The Dump was a safe place to play and it had everything we wanted".

Am I being too sensitive but I thought parents were supposed to actively discourage their children from playing at dumps!!!

Have you read it until the end?

do you discuss the characters?
do you discuss the plot?
do you discuss what a dump is? Why the characters might say that

Clackyheels · 10/11/2022 19:43

My daughter read that one. A week later I found her running around with wild dogs at the local dump. Be warned.

Definitely go and speak to the teacher about it tomorrow. They'll appreciate an educated perspective.

ZOMBIE THREAD

Realistically, I think by the time your dd is old enough to play out alone and unsupervised, she’ll be sensible enough to understand that she shouldn’t play in a rubbish dump even though a book she read when she was 5 said kids play in the rubbish dump. At that stage she’ll be old enough/sensible enough to make better judgements.

Yellowdahlia12 · 10/11/2022 19:49

I wouldn't know where to find a rubbish dump. The local tip, yes, but no children play there, it's very well staffed.
It's a story in any case, it's not encouraging children to do anything, except read.

@Kanaloa I think she is now old enough to have left school a couple of years ago.

ZOMBIE

Omg please post a photo. This book went down in actual history in our family as being the most ridiculously depressing kids book of all time. We had a mixture of horror and laughing in the house the night my eldest bought that disaster home.

Don't care it's a zombie thread, this book will still be doing the rounds in schools somewhere! It's a depressing weird classic!

slowquickstep · 10/11/2022 19:55

We used to play on the railway line and in the river, i was only 5.

Dogsogdog · 10/11/2022 19:57

@mnhq why are you not banning this “pbp” instead just pointlessly deleting their posts? It’s fucking ridiculous
