Supermarkets and alcohol

Heard on the radio today that shops will be asked to no longer display junk food in the entrances of shops and supermarkets. This is meant to be an attempt at combatting obesity.

Today, I went to my local Tesco, and was faced with shelves of discounted alcohol. This was in the entrance, and also in the lead up to the tills. There was no escaping it.
Imagine you are a recovering alcoholic, or someone who is early on in their journey that would really be affected by seeing aisles of bottles when you just want to check out with some other goods.
Yes, obesity is an issue, but so is alcoholism.

AIBU for thinking that major supermarkets should think about where they display discounted booze?

YABU – they can display the booze where they want
YANBU – they should display it in the dedicated alcohol aisle.

YANBU. I gave up alcohol this year and it's bloody difficult. I'm not an alcoholic but I can imagine if you're faced with that it would be very hard.

It's horrible for addicts especially bank holidays, summer and Christmas. It's at the door, the exit, every other bloody end aisle and where you queue for the self-check out. I'm ok now but the first Xmas was hard. I wish it was all in one aisle which I could just not go down.

I think shops shouldn't be able to discount alcohol full stop. Where I live we have minimum alcohol pricing and booze has to stay in a sectioned off area of the shop. Far too many lives are ruined by drink. You can't ban it at this point but making it pricey and reducing displays the same as with fags is the way forward.

I first got sober in Australia actually and having it all safely in the bottle shops was bliss. There were whole supermarkets with no booze in at all.

It was the same during lockdowns. My local Tesco wold force people to queue, and the start was in the booze aisle.

I agree.
Have it in one section at the back.
It's horrible for people who may be struggling to stay sober to see it displayed like that. It's fairly easy enough to stay out of pubs and bars, but everybody has to shop.

Living in Australia, I've got used to the sectioning off of alcohol in supermarkets; most often in a completely separate building several yards away. Such outlets don't carry the name of the supermarket, so Woollies is BWS, Coles is Liquorland. Aldi has it in-store, but in a separate section, as does IGA.

Having been in the UK lately, I was amazed to see alcohol displayed all over the place, sort of teaming up with other foods. This was new to me as the last time I was there it was all on alcohol shelves in much the same way that tinned veg are.

At first I thought the Australian way was very nanny state-ish but the alcoholism stats say different:
