There was a childrens book that I have vivid memories of and I remember it really scaring me as a child. I can’t remember the details but a tall man/ghoul type thing sneaks out in the nighttime and there’s a picture of him/it licking/nibbling the bristles of a broom.
The image is burned into my head but I can’t find it anywhere. Siblings and my mum claim to have no memory of this.
Please! Anyone else?? Creepy man sneaking around a house..I feel like maybe a child wakes up and sees him??

@EBearhug Oh god, we also had a copy of those particular cautionary tales. 🤢

Snip, snap, snip! the scissors go, and Conrad cries out 'Oh oh oh!'

I'm beginning to think my parents must have hated me ...

Long Lankin? (Still one of the creepiest books I have ever read, and it’s YA!)

Now I've got the song by Steely Dan stuck in my head!

ALoveOfBattenburg · 02/10/2022 04:26

I doubt it would be this but this thread has reminded me of The Sandman animation back in the 90s. That truly terrified me as a child and the image of the sandman is forever burned into my brain!

Hi,

It's Old Man Try-By-Night from Fantastic Stories by Terry Jones. Got a copy here. My 8 year old is morbidly fascinated by this particular story, as was I as a child!

IT IS!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!

Consider me suitable scarred for life!

ladyjadie · 02/10/2022 10:25

Omg my grandparents too had a copy of Struwwelpeter, my mum used to read it to me and as a child who sucked her thumb, the great long-legged scissor man was the stuff of my nightmares!

ddl1 · 02/10/2022 12:49

I read Struwwelpeter too, but found it so over-the-top that I didn't take it seriously. The ones that really scared me were 'Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories' because they were supposed to be true!

itssquidstella · 02/10/2022 12:55

Bloody hell @AleynEivlys

My DD18 came with us to a Steeleye Span gig last year, she was the youngest person there by around 30 years! She loves all the "murder ballads."

I used to repeatedly get a book out the library that had a boggart in it. it was a children's book but was very scary. I've tried googling but all comes up in Harry Potter stuff and the Susan Cooper book...but it was definitely 80s and much more sinister. The illustration was like a black, scary version of Slimer from ghostbusters.

Forfrigz · 04/10/2022 20:07

Whilst we're all here and the OP has found their decidedly creepy book, does anyone remember one about a little girl and the contents of a school bag, I think it was at the beginning of the book and they are having brekast and the big sister is going to school and in the illustration it shows all the things inside her bag.
Been bugging me for years I've tried and tried to search for it!

I think I remember this. Was it a collection of stories and one was something to do with a rabbit?!

Was it this?

QueenBodicea · 04/10/2022 20:37

I loved and was fascinated by the copy of Struwwelpeter that was in our house as a child in the 1970s and it was only later that my mum told me that our aunt had bought it for my older brother. My mum said that she had been horrified at the time that the aunt had thought the stories were suitable for a child and she was equally horrified that I then bought it for my own son in the 2000s! But I think it does appeal to the ghoulish side of a child. Bit like the Roald Dahl books.

MostTacticalNameChange · 04/10/2022 21:15

@DeePlume Ooh, no, I don't think it was, but that does look familiar. It might have been a bogle rather than a boggart. So frustrating.

Also borrowed a book from the school library as an 11/12 year old about mountain folk and the female orgasm. Yes, you read that right - I have never searched for that one -god knows what to type in!

Twinsforthewin · 04/10/2022 21:23

Jesus H Christ that's disturbing 🫣🫣🫣

DeePlume · 04/10/2022 21:23

There is a story in that book called Russell's bogle!

DeePlume · 04/10/2022 21:24

That book sounds very, erm, interesting haha
