To take DS out of reception?

DS1 is 18 so it's been many years since he was in reception. DS2 turned 4 on the 29th of August, I know I could've deffered him a year as I did this with DS1 but unlike him, DS2 seemed ready and he seemed bored of going to the childminders. Everyday he's gone in he's cried saying he doesn't want me to leave him (he never was like this at CM), the past week he's been having accidents, I've tried to speak to his teacher and she has mentioned he's very shy (not like this usually) but he'll settle in soon.

Would reducing him to part time help? You are entitled to have him attend part- time until he's compulsory school age so school can't say no. If you think he's otherwise ready but struggling with tiredness and possibly the strain of being somewhere he doesn't know people well, keeping him off every Wednesday might make quite a big difference? Alternatively you could arrange to pick up at lunchtime every day, although I didn't find that worked that well with DC1 as school clearly found it annoying to have a non standard pick up for him every day.

Even my autumn born DC2 struggled with the long slog of the autumn term, it should get a lot better after Christmas when the terms are also a lot shorter.

I agree ask about part time and try that first, hopefully you could turn it into a positive experience overall. I’d be worried that just taking him out would mean he’s still dreading it when September comes back around again.

Did he go to pre-school or was it just the childminder?

Did he not do pre-school? If just childminders then it is a big change for him, as pre schoolers will be used to a classroom setting a bit more. How is he during the day? Most kids cry and drop off but are fine once in there

Can you take him out of school and put him into a nursery or pre school for a year? You will get the 30 hours funding and potentially the tax free childcare contribution too.
