to return something 1 day out of date?

28 day return policy, today is my first day off in 12 days so planned on returning (online Debenhams shopping) but it is day 29. Do I just suck it up? Try and return it anyway? What would you do..

I'd give it a try, what's the worst that can happen. I've returned out of date once before without issue

Jellybean23 · 01/10/2022 14:46

If they won't refund you, they might offer a credit on your account instead.

LIZS · 01/10/2022 14:47

If you are using Royal Mail they have been on strike since yesterday so could argue it was 28th day?

TinaYouFatLard · 01/10/2022 14:49

I would argue that you can’t count the unexpected bank holiday!

Change12345 · 01/10/2022 14:51

I returned items late and put a note in apologising and hoped that as a valued customer they would accept it. They did a refund

Keyansier · 01/10/2022 15:09

If they say no say you'll raise it publicly on social media. They'll agree to it then.

Nope, they still won’t give a shit 😂

properdoughnut · 01/10/2022 15:13

If you need the cash sell it on ebay. If you can risk a credit note or being declined a refund then chance it.

beanyl · 01/10/2022 15:17

I can't actually generate a return code for that order as it says its now out of date. I bought something else though just a few days later (which I am keeping) which is within the return window, is it acceptable to use that label? I am more than happy to be given "credit" to use in store, doesn't have to be a refund.

@properdoughnut could you please explain what you mean?

YellowTreeHouse · 01/10/2022 15:18

@beanyl No, it’s not acceptable to use that label because it’s a different item. That won’t work.

No they wouldn’t they would more than likely highlight the fact you’re had 28 days publicly

I don't think a multi-million pound organisation like Debenhams is in the habit of publicly sniping at customers on Twitter, even if the customer is wrong, for the sake of a garment that is one day out of its return-by date.

If they are, more fool them.

I doubt it, and I don't think (outside of something with the potential to go viral or very small companies where one mention matters) companies care about social media complaints any more. Every single large company's social media mentions is a constant string of complaints, and one more added to it complaining that the company are following their policy isn't likely to force their hand.

Ah you said you're OK to get credit so I'd go for it. I'd you need the cash then you're best selling it in case they give you credit

I mean, you can try but they won't refund you.

Just sell it on eBay or Marketplace.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 01/10/2022 16:25

If they have a chat function on their website, ask and say you were on holiday and forgot, plead stupidity or whatever. They might give you a credit note. I did this with ASOS a while back.

beanyl · 01/10/2022 18:00

I've returned it but due to the strikes I've no idea when it will actually get to them. Thankfully the other parcel had a 60 day return so that one should have no issues obviously.

@mountainsunsets what would happen if they dont refund or give me credit? I wonder if theyll value or take any notice of the fact I still shop with them quite a lot (mostly online) and generally kept most purchases.

OP posts:
mountainsunsets · 01/10/2022 18:02

@beanyl I have no idea - different shops do things differently.

They may refund you just to save hassle but if you've done it under the wrong label it could cause issues.

mountainsunsets · 01/10/2022 18:07

Their website does say this:

Where we suspect fraudulent activity, including but not limited to circumstances where there are suspicious claims relating to orders having been placed, but not received, or if we suspect that you are returning items after they have been used or worn, or items returned do not match what you ordered, we reserve the right to withhold refunds and block your account (and any associated accounts) from placing orders in future.

Namechange1345677 · 01/10/2022 18:08

I've you've returned under the wrong label you won't get a refund as its basically fraud....

beanyl · 01/10/2022 18:18

Thanks everyone.

Yes, I have seen that @mountainsunsets when trying to find out more/ I couldn't find a telephone number to call on.

I have previously returned items from 2 separate orders together too in the same parcel with no issues (possibly from other retailers) - surely easier for all involved and better for the environment.

Without a way to really contact them (again working another 12 days in a row from Monday so in the interest of time and it being day 29 just wanted to sort it out today) I thought this was the best option to return and hope for the best whether it is a refund or store credit. Worst case scenario I get nothing, probably still better in the wider picture that its return and in perfect condition to be resold than probably sitting in the bottom of my wardrobe.
If I was able to just do it yesterday all would have been totally fine, its literally a day.
