What is the 'thing' with putting the heating on?

Surely just because you put it on doesn't mean you have to keep it on. I've never understood this thing that people have about not putting or putting on the heating as if you're stuck with it on once you put it on!

Dress warmer and save your money for when it gets REALLY cold.

(P.S. Elderly people need it to be warmer. Let's hope you're not there yet.)

At last! Someone said it! Just put the fudging heating on and stop with the pity parties "Oooh I'm freezing, but too poor to put it on." Jesus. They can't have what you can't pay, just put it on and shut up.

Competitive being cold is an annual sport on Mumsnet. This year being worse due to the big price rises.

Ours has been on for about a week.

What a wanky thing to say. Arrogant and show-offy.

It is all well saying put layers on to keep warm, but what about those of us with pets?

I'm confused...

Vapeyvapevape · 01/10/2022 19:52

I put an extra layer on the other day as I was chilly indoors but my face was still cold . Are balaclavas frowned upon on Teams ?

Unless you have pets requiring some heat like birds or lizards for example, they will be fine. Would probably put a jumper on sphynx, but most common pets have fur.

wentworthinmate · 01/10/2022 20:12

My heating is always switched to on 24/7. It’s the thermostat that I move when and if required (not for some time I hope!).

Neverendingmindfuck · 01/10/2022 20:14

I have physically switched my boiler off.
It gets switched on when I need hot water (I have an electric shower) , and the few dishes I use get rinsed and washed up every few days. (Only me, very limited diet)
So when the heating gets switched on it will literal thing 😊

My cats have fur coats and are constantly in and out in cold, wind and rain, by choice. Come in wet and cold, I'm sure the house feels warm in comparison! Elderly pets may need more warmth.

hotdiggetydog · 01/10/2022 20:29

Have you watched the news? It's got quite expensive recently

It was always a thing though. 50 years ago my parents heard the same about shushing and putting jumper in because it's not November yet.
My dad only conceded to beginning of October after his ilness!

celticprincess · 01/10/2022 20:41

Mine is on a timer and thermostat. I don’t want it clicking on during the night or when I’m at work. I’ve currently got the thermostat on about 18 but only timed for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. The exception was today as it was raining and I needed to put the washing on the radiators. My house doesn’t dry things well just hanging on an airer or even a heated airer.
One load made it on the line before the rain hit the second load has had to go on the radiators. Last night it didn’t come on at all with the thermostat but this morning it did. As the winter starts my timer might be extended.

Putting the heating on is a sign that the weather has become cold enough to require it. Usually this is then pretty much a one way street until the next spring. The longer people can stave it off the better it feels psychologically.

Yes we have ours set to hot water only, until we decide to put the heating on, so it's significant for us.

Greenshed · 01/10/2022 21:00

The heating clicks on if the temperature is low enough. I know prices have rocketed, but if it’s cold, it’s cold and the heating kicks on. We’ll make cuts elsewhere if necessary, but being cold is detrimental to our health - damp causes huge problems, not just to health, but to bricks and mortar.
Between a rock and a hard place springs to mind…

Calmdown14 · 01/10/2022 21:01

I have storage heaters so it is very much on or off!

Even without cost of living it would usually be towards end of October before they are necessary.

Have put on the woodburner once ) yesterday) as it was 60mph winds (ne Scotland) and it felt such a wild day. Today it's perfectly okay with nothing

I have an elderly greyhound.. she has zero body fat to keep her warm. I also have a bird.

Moll2020 · 01/10/2022 21:47

It’s like a competition to see who can last the longest without putting the heating on! I put mine on on Friday evening, I got soaked on the way home from work and was bloody freezing. If it’s cold I’ll put it on. The End!

Mfsf · 01/10/2022 22:05

We have hive so I turn it on from my phone or Alexa when I need it . It saves a lot of money

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 30/09/2022 20:13

Technically ours hasn’t been “off” all summer, we just dropped the thermostat down to 12 or something, so it never came on. Now we’ve moved it to 17 and it’s coming on the odd morning for half an hour - which is lower than it would have been this time last year

Ditto @TheOtherBoleynGirls

its set for think 16 so if lower than that clicks on

night goes down to 14 or clicks on and too hot

last few days we’ve put in on by turning stat to 18 as been cold and 30m s. Is enough to warm house esp for dd5 plus she goes to school, dh to work and me under duvet as work nights so don’t need on 8-4/5 at the moment

same about 5 put on fir 30m to warm up bedroom as hers is cold

saying thst didn’t do 5 today as warm enough

previous years if cold I turn on

im not like friends who most are cold and can afford to heat but as it isn’t oct they don’t turn on

far better todo. Quick blast and warm house and people

T1Dmama · 01/10/2022 23:31

I’ve not turned mine on yet, preferring to put on warmer clothes or sit with a throw over me in the evenings ….
Have you watched the news about the cost of living increase ? In my view the longer I can delay putting it on the better as I simply can’t afford £400 a month!

NattyNatashia · 01/10/2022 23:33

Not sure why you care but some people turn the system off altogether during the warm months, then as we get cold days they turn it back on. Most systems are on a thermastat so it only actually heats up when needed, just a way of saying its teh time of year we're getting some cold days. Personally I never turn it off.

Ahh, heating.. I vaguely remember the days gone by when we could afford an hour a day of heating... not for the past 4 years and certainly not again in the future! Ice cube lifestyle for use, yet again

But if you're out for 10 hours a day, why would you want your home to be warm? Would it not make more sense to turn the heating on when you're there and turn it off when you're not there?

kateandme · 02/10/2022 05:36

I think they used to all have a 1hr button option.now they don't.so alot of the time unless you have an attached timer they stay on til u turn them off which can be incredibly easy to forget to do!
