This is old but it made me laugh.

www.irishcentral.com/culture/entertainment/why-is-ed-sheeran-the-dullest-man-in-music-the-choice-of-an-irish-generation.amp

Sheehan is the worst kind of bland, mediocre artist and it doesn't surprise me that he also lacks originality.

Angelinflipflops · 01/10/2022 09:41

So he's bland and mediocre yet also sounds like Marvin gaye, how does that work then?

Abraxan · 01/10/2022 09:42

blockpavingismynightmare · 30/09/2022 14:08

Ed Sheerin has form for this. He is a music magpie

He won the previous case when this was claimed.

And he has a pint. In pop music there are only so many notes, chords, etc to chose from and there are thousands and thousands of songs released each year.

Abraxan · 01/10/2022 09:49

ElizabethBest · 01/10/2022 08:55

All you have to do is listen to the “4 chord song” to see how easy it is for one song to sound like another. It doesn’t make it plagiarism.

I like that and it kind of shoes the point re pop music especially

Maybe his special skill is taking something beautiful and crushing it into music for people who don't like music.

Angelinflipflops · 01/10/2022 09:57

Cravattwat, ah music snobbery at its finest, I'm sure you have impeccable taste in music

cravattwat · 01/10/2022 10:01

Of course!

Seriously though, I can appreciate the appeal of lots of music I might not listen to myself but I honestly find the love for Ed Sheehan completely baffling. I'm not generally a music snob actually but I'll make a special effort for some.

I am slightly taking the piss though.

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 01/10/2022 10:02

Detailed arguments in the Times today about the exact notes used and how they are different enough for Ed to win the case. Lots of specific info about the limited number of notes, chords etc and therefore unavoidable similarities. Seems to me it's a bit like cookery book writers during each other because they all used flour, eggs and sugar to make a cake.

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 01/10/2022 10:03

Suing not during

Aworldofmyown · 01/10/2022 10:06

I feel sorry for him, he gets a constant stream of court threats and has said he now videos all writing sessions.
You can see why the soul seems to have gone out of his music.

Nolongera · 01/10/2022 10:09

I think it was Noel Gallagher who said good musicians borrow, great musicians steal.

Been going on for years, George Harrison " my Sweet lord" the Chiffons " He's so fine".

At the end of the day there are only so many notes, chords and progressions, mathematically there are bound to be replications.

Much of this is driven by the lawyers, if I owned the rights to a popular song and someone rang me up asking if I would like another million, no win no fee, I would take their arm off.

I imagine se people are doing this full time now, computer programs designed to look for similarities.

debbrianna · 01/10/2022 10:17

Magpie. Kandi Burruss was credited after the shape of you because she was ready to take him to court.

Its all about money. To Eds and John Mcdaids credit, they both said that when they hear songs with similar sounds to theirs in, which happens a lot, they don’t want anything to do either this suing culture.

LovelyQuiche · 30/09/2022 15:19

The first time I ever heard “thinking out loud” I thought it was a rip off of Marvin Gaye

its the baseline that is the same

the similarity is striking

I thought the same as well first time I heard it. Remember having a chat about it with my dd in the car when it came on the radio. She’s a huge ES fan and wouldn’t hear it until I played MG song.

Chicheguevara · 01/10/2022 10:53

Similar beat/rhythm but so do lots of songs.

Cocolapew · 01/10/2022 11:04

Why should Robin Thicke etc have made money from Blurred Lines when it was a total rip off from Marvin Gaye? You can't just go around stealing music written by someone else.

You don’t have to understand it, it’s music and people like what they like. That article just sounded like it was written by someone very bitter and desperate to be cool and edgy, slagging off not only Ed but all his fans. Talented writers don’t have to go for the nasty shock factor. I see no point in that, bitchy things don’t make me laugh but I’m probably a very different person to you.

I don’t listen heavy metal but feel no need to ‘understand’ those that do. I’m glad there’s music out there for everyone. There’s no one that I’d be ‘baffled’ by others liking, it’s a personal thing but what I do ‘understand’ is that people are different.

cravattwat · 01/10/2022 11:14

Good for you @ClosedStorm. And yes, we clearly are very different people. 👍

Angelinflipflops · 01/10/2022 12:11

Cocalaplew, you see to me they are two very different songs, I like blurred lines, despite its controversies

Angelinflipflops · 01/10/2022 12:14

Closed storm, eloquently put!

Indeed, but one day someone else will own the rights and will probably want the money.

MangyInseam · 01/10/2022 13:00

So I do think the songs sound quite similar when you strip them down, the same chord progression, similar tempo. The Gaye song has that funky guitar of course which is so distinctive.

But if you go to any actual old style R&B concert, or a gospel concert which is a similar thing, there are tons of songs like that, where the underlying elements are very similar and a lot of what differentiates them is the vocal performance and the layers they add.

Stuff like this will just make songwriting impossible.

nokitchen · 01/10/2022 13:11

Mark Owen's new song Magic reminds me of something at the moment. Can't quite pin it down.

Yes!! And I love it!! It’s co-written by Robbie Williams. Mark isn’t on the writing credits

Ed's songs are all different tints of the same shade of beige, e.g. vanilla beige, ice beige, stone beige etc etc.
