Can they do this? Withholding my property (deliveries)

I buy and sell on vinted. Due to my work schedule I'm rarely home when I'm expecting deliveries so I have them delivered to my local evri parcel shop which is a tesco extra down the road.

I've had a few issues with that shop (one being their managers attitude to my disabled DS' being in a special needs buggy - long story) and another time they were being unnecessarily difficult about me collecting a parcel but there's no other parcel shop nearby so I have little option but to use them.

So I went to collect a parcel today only to be told that they can't give me it because the system is down and I wouldn't be able to do an electronic signature. I asked when the matter would be resolved and was told they don't know. They just point blank refused to give me my parcels.

So can they continue to just withhold my property citing their system being down which is very much a them problem..

Can you go back tomorrow? It might just be unfortunate timing, and the system was down briefly. But if it's still down tomorrow, I'd be asking some tougher questions about how parcels are going to be released.

I'll try and get there tomorrow and hope for the best. As soon as I said I was there for a parcel they (on the shop floor tending shelves) just said the system is down without even bothering to check if it was up again.

Voters - unreasonable why?

You need to escalate the issue beyond the local store I think.
They can't release them without following protocol but I would think they need a back up if it is more than a shortlived issue.

Of course they can’t give you the parcels if the system is down, they aren’t withholding your property like some form of kidnap situation. Just go back 🤣

Isn’t there a problem with Evri parcel shop, at moment. I have a message on my Vinted page.

I've seen that same message a few times when browsing on particular sellers pages but it's not a universal thing. The problem I've had today is a fault with tescos' system.

I don't know if I've just been lucky in the past but on a few occasions when I've been told the systems are down and won't be able to issue the parcel... as soon as I've explained I need it and won't be able to come back in the next couple of days they've let me take the parcel...they've taken a copy of the parcel number and a picture of the email confirmation or text and I've never had any issues with

ChilliBandit · 29/09/2022 20:35

The guy at my Evri shop recognises me embarrassingly and I never have to sign anything. He just hands over the parcel. I’d go back tomorrow and if they say the same thing I’d complain to Tesco and Vinted.

The owner of my Evri shop (it’s also a corner shop) makes up arbitrary rules, like you can’t collect parcels on Sundays or Bank Holidays even if the shop is open. I don’t complain because it’s a useful shop but not sure how much control Evri have over the shops.

I think this is a risk you have to take these days. They can't issue the parcel, as they can't process the acceptance - and you taking the parcel. A pp said one place let her have the parcel and did the other stuff later. Most places wouldn't let you do that. It's annoying, but I don't think they've done much wrong.

I got an email and text from Argos a while back, telling me my item had come in and I could come collect it. My closest Argos is 10 miles away, and I went to get the item - worth £200 - and their 'system' was down. I got there an hour after getting the message. Their system had gone down 5 minutes before I got there.. Don't know why the woman felt the need to tell me that! This helped me in NO WAY. Hmm

So I hung around for half an hour and popped to get a couple of things I needed (from Asda,) but that could have waited a day or two. The Argos 'system' didn't come back on and I was informed it would not be back on til tomorrow. I was so pissed off. A 20 mile round trip for nothing.

Similar thing happened in Boots the other week. Their 'system' went down.. the one where they get peoples prescriptions from the GP (electronically.) MINE had been sent through on the Monday, and this was Thursday, so I KNOW it would have been done. But they needed 'the system' running to look for it apparently. I said 'can you not just look on your shelves?' She said 'system is down so we don't know where it is...' I mean, she could have looked in the alphabetised shelves under the letter my surname begins with, but when I suggested this she said there are far too many to look through. She couldn't be fucked, that was the truth.

Its good to hear that some places will bend the rules slightly and let a recognised customer take their parcels, there's no chance of that with this shop though unfortunately.

They seem awkward for the sake of being awkward. I've been there 4 or 5 times over the period of a fortnight and last week, despite being served by the same person multiple times previously and them recognising me and knowing my face, they refused me my parcels on account that I didn't have photo ID with me at that time.

I feel as though we've both rubbed one another up the wrong way after the incident with DS' buggy and they've taken a dislike to me.

God that would have done my head in. I actually saw somebody having that very same issue in superdrug at their pharmacy the other day.

Like your argos woman, I feel like today they just couldn't be arsed to check. They were on the shop floor tending to the shelves (manager included) and gave me a blanket "no, system is down" as opposed to actually bothering to check whether it was back up again.

I use evri quite a lot and I've never had to sign in any of the shops - I post and pick up in a few different places which span 3 different counties (my house, office, my parents etc), so I'm surprised they are so insistent on signing even normally and more so that they won't make an exception when it's their issue this time. I suppose if they are they only ones in your area there's not much you can do though - have you checked to see if there are any other non evri posting alternatives? e.g. post office is slightly more expensive but does a pick up from your house, including printing the label for you, all for free at the moment, and vinted has also started partnering with inpost recently where you just drop at the lockers - there are 4 within 3 miles of me, so might be some near you?
